for a reasonable priced utilty .22,not looking for add ons or tricked out, which would you choose, based on function, reliability and accuracy?SIR has them on for $140 and $168,respectively[although the 795 is back ordered for likely another couple of months-they had them on for $129 before Christmas]

It's funny how retailers can have a great price on something they don't have in stock....!!!!

If you're set on buying from SIR, then I'd say for $28 extra bucks - the 597 is the one to have....today!!! Why wait???

That said, I really like my 597 and would have said suggested it anyway (even over a 10/22). Great accuracy and function in a cost-effective rifle. Will make a nice plinker, informal target shooter or hunting gun!

Mine really likes CCI Mini-Mags. You'll have to test a few different 22's to see what your's prefers.

Good luck - SD

597 has a better look and different option of stock and finish. Marlin 795 is very very reliable and fun to shoot. for me these two are very good little gun.

I've heard good about both. I ended up getting a 597 just becauese I liked the way it shouldered for me when I tried them both side by side at SIR.

nope-no add ons-the intended use is strictly a utility truck gun for potting grouse. The only thing I've heard against them is the hollow sounding stock-but I plan on filling that with hard foam, but until I actually use it I won;t know. This is the advantage of a website like this-you get to hear people's opinions who have actually owned and used them-not just reading advertisements[where they ALL are the ''best'']
