I've got a 7mm-08 with a 20" barrel (youth). it's going to get used for everything. What would be your choice for bullets. I'm thinking 150gr Partition or 160 gr Speers Deepcurl. What would your suggestion be??

I will be reloading it so any availlable bullet is a possiblity.

Thanks. G

For hunting game animals I prefer Hornady bullets... I have always had good performance with them.

It's funny how the Hor interlocks seem to have a good name, but the SSTs are known for flying apart and I thought they were more or less made with the same interlocking ring. I never know what to think of this.

Of the two choices you've offered, I'd take the 150 Partition - with the smaller diameter after expansion it will penetrate better, and with animals of the size of elk and moose, I'd go with that one over the Deep Curl.

Another good option would be the 150 Ballistic Tip, which is quite a tough bullet, just make sure it comes from one of the newer boxes, marked "Hunting". The 154 SP already mentioned will also work well at 7-08 velocities.

I like the Nosler 140 Partitions and the 139 Hornady 139 Interlock... they are both a good balance of weight, velocity and accuracy for the 7mm-08... for deer I drop down to the 120's.

Mt final choice for a hunting bullet for 7-08 is the Swift Scirocco II in 150gr, extremely tough and ballistically one of the better ones out there in that weight if you are looking at longer shots, very good retained energy down range and extremely accurate.

Seat them shallow...

Hornady 162gr Interlock BTSP...the best .284 cal bullet for most non-magnum class cartridges IMHO (the 154gr Interlock SP is a close 2nd). They are very reliable, expand well, retain their weight, penetrate deep and best of all they are CHEAP to buy...so you can practice more!

Never had to , but every rifle is different, for hunting rounds I make sure they fit the magazine then start my test loads.

We found that with the heavier bullets we got the best accuracy with a full case... and accuracy decreased when the bullets were deeply seated... but as you say, every gun is diffrent... just worked this way in all 5 of out 7mm-08's.

Funny, the one I currently own has a COAL of 2.800" right on the book specs. But it don't always work that way.

I slipped off topic a bit.

Accubond is also one worth looking at.

The SC II's retained upwards of 95% of their weight when I recovered them from back stops, haven't recovered one from a animal yet although they appear to perform very well.

Last year I used 139 gr SST with my 7-08 on a moose a just over 350 yards...I have no complaints with the end results.

Since the 7mm-08 is a chambering that churns up somewhat modest velocities, it treats common
bullets a bit better than does one of the magnums.
That being said, in my 7x57, I reach for the 150 Scirocco II or the 140 Partition or Accubond.
Very effective, and usually easy to get to shoot well.

We also like the 139 SST... on paper. For hunting we prefer stouter bullets as noted in my first post... however, many others seem to like the SST on game.
