I personally think the 7mm-08 will work great for black bears...just not sure what shell to shoot? Maybe a hornady light mag? Anybody got any input? I don't reload so it has to be an off the shelf shell.

Cheers

federal vital shock 140 gr Barnes TSX would be #1, followed by Vital shock 140 Nosler Partitions and Accubonds

What about a heavier roundnose? Chances are the shooting will be under 100 yards, so trajectory is less of an issue.

What about a heavier roundnose?

Bullet construction is far more important than bullet weight or shape when talking expanding bullets. The tsx will hold together and penetrate better than any roundnose bullet available in 7mm-08 factory loads.

I have always used the same round for all large game from deer to moose , elk bear and I use a factory 175g I am going to start to reload so I can get them at 160g. I also do taxidermy work and the hole has never been anything I cant fix. Never much meat loss so ya thats what I use in my 7mm

He is talking about the 7mm-08,not a lot of 175gr factory loads available. Most factory loads are from 139gr to 150gr.

So the 150g to me then would be the way to go

Except that the 150gr loading is with the speer hot core. The 140gr tsx, partition, and accubond are much tougher bullets.

I guess I missed the -8 I like my strate 7mm more

There is no straight 7mm cartridge.7mm on it's own does not designate a cartridge.7mm-08,7x57,7mm express,7mmwsm,7mm remington mag,7mmweatherby mag,7mmstw,7mmsaum,7mmultramag are all cartridges that use the same diameter bullet, but they all use different cases.

for decent lower priced shell that should perform good, check out the Federal Fusion 140 gr load with the bonded core bullet. Much better choice than the 150 gr Speer in the Federal power shock load, and often it is cheaper too

I think I am going to go with a 150gr bullet...little more weight retention.

Actually the 150gr speer will retain less weight than the 140gr tsx, partition or accubond. The tsx usually retains 90% to 100% of it's weight, while the speer will be lucky to retain 50% if it strikes any bone at all.If heavy bone is struck, that could drop to 30%.

as stubblejumper said, weight retention has nothing to do with bullet weight, but all to do with bullet design. a company could make a 175 gr in 7mm-08 that wouldnt exit a coyote broadside, and barnes has made one that weighs 120 gr that could quite possibly break both shoulders of a 450 lb black bear
