7mm 08 for Moose.

Yes. Fly at 'er.

Hell to the naw. That bullet is garbage. I might, if I had no other choice, use them on a whitetail, but they're about my 43rd choice of 7mm bullet. 140gr Partition would be my first choice. TSX would be OK though I haven't fooled with them much in short cases due to their length.

Maybe someone has some of the old Failsafes lying around. They were just about the greatest bullet ever designed for the middle calibers but they went the way of the dodo.

I think they changed something in that bullet somewhere along the line. It was loaded in some of the earliest factory ammo from remington, and worked well for me (early 80's). I bought some and reloaded them, found a good load, and all was well. Until that batch was gone and I bought another box. Never could equal those first runs again. - dan

Agreed! The only thing I might use it on is sheep, and that would be an almost surefire way to ruin a lot of the best-eating meat up here.

It certainly was not the frangible failure it is today.

Ive used 139 SST's on moose out to 400 yards, works just fine ...YMMV :)

I've never had an issue with accubonds or interlock bullets coming apart, even at 50 yards.

I've shot Moose and Bears with the 7-08, with 139 Hornady SST Interlock bullets a couple of times. Neither of the Moose were over 150 yards away.

One was shot just behind the front leg, about a foot above the bottom line, went through the rib and took out both lungs before exiting the other side. I was impressed. The second animal was closer, appx 75 yards and the bullet entered just at the bottom of he shoulder hump, went throught the shoulder blade, took out both arteries under the spine and broke the spinal cord after taking out the bottom of the vertebrae. This bullet held together but lost 50% of its weight and was recovered against the hide on the outlet side.

Heavy constructed bullets are great and I fully understand why people like them, so if they're available, use them.

At ranges out to a couple of hundred yards, the 7-08 will perform very well.

I've shot Moose with the socalled diminutive 257 Roberts without issue, many are take with 243Winchester loads.

I wouldn't be comfortable using 6mm bullets for hunting game as large as Moose and draw the line at .257. Depends on all sorts of factors.

I've seen more than one Moose in FN camps that were shot with 22 caliber bullets, ranging from 22LR to 22-250

Used the 140 Partition and 160 TSX for the same job out of the 7x57 and it was my client loaner for several seasons. Worked great only one animal went out of sight after the hit, and that was when I switched bullets. Found it the next day not ideal, it was a 175gr RN. Last time I used those, and they may well have been Interlocs (Fed blue box).

Still can’t call it a bullet failure, it worked, and was dead within a rifle shot. Just not a visible one.

Thank for the info ref the 139 gr Hornady interlock, we used them on bear and white tail with great results (150-250 yds), will look into something better for the swamp donkey.

I would use accubond or partiton of i was you and as heavy as you can get, 165gn would be perfect balance between weight and speed! Mono might do a good job too, 150gn driven fairly fast would be good I think! Keep you shot inside 200m and place it well and it will do the job for sure!!

My experience with interlocks is that they vary. The flat bases seem to hold together better then the boat tails. IMO a 139IL FB is up to the task that any 7mm-08 or 7x57 is going to put it through, that includes moose from the crown of the barrel out too further then most of us should be shooting.

I think the flat base vs boat tail thing is true of most bullets. - dan

I took an Alberta Whitetail with a Bubbatized 7x57 and Federal's 175 grainer, it would have been a decent buck anywhere but Alberta and Saskatchewan, it didn't go far.

I later chrono'ed the Federal 175 grainers, they weren't even breaking 2000 fps. The Bell (Igman) stuff was almost 300 fps faster. The Federal load was almost 200 fps slower than my 30WCF with Remington 170 grainers.
