I'm considering buying the Remington 700 SPS youth in 7mm-08 for my wife and daughter. Both are lefties and very small in stature. We will be hunting anything from coyote to moose. The left hand version doesn't come in anything bigger then the 7mm-08. I will be handloading for them. My biggest concern is how well this round will do on moose. What would its max range be?

Shoot the heaviest grain available and keep shots within reasonable distance(200-250 yards) and I'd say your fine.

Our moose camp, only one guy had a magnum ( 7mm Rem Mag), rest of us had standard fair and we've been taking moose for years.

Hunter knowing his limit's and bullet placement is key.

good advice, if it was 1945

I'd feel confident in using a 7-08 on moose. I'd load a Barnes 140 gr TSX to 2700-2800 fps, and anything inside 350 yards would be in big trouble.

As you've pointed out, it is obvious that there are other very good alternatives to the old 7mm/175gr RN for big game, but that bullet STILL is a very good choice for the 7x57 or 7/08 while hunting moose at reasonable ranges. It did the job in 1945 and is still doing it now. :)

the 7mm/08 will be fine with a good bullet, as mentioned the X is probably the best choice. If not experienced hunters I'd keep shoots in side 200yds if possible.

There are no downsides to using a lighter, premium bullet these days, and plenty of positives compared to the heavier cup and core bullets of yesteryear.:slap:

I agree, it would probably work quite well, but @ 2500 fps, you'll probably handicap yourself to a max range of about 200 yards. A lighter, controlled expansion bullet will penetrate as deep, give lighter recoil (good for kids & women), and probably shoot more accurate. All good things in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with wanting to go classic, but an SPS 7-08 is not a Mauser 7x57

for the 1,000,000th time:

a 7-08 will kill moose just fine.

when will these threads end?

Who knows? maybe when the .270 vs 30-06 threads end?......never. But, I agree with everyone so far that stated the 7-08 is an extremely capable rounds. And, practise makes perfect, ...... if not perfect, then better. :)

The R15 and 120 vmax and 120 tsx make a pretty good combination for year round shooting. Recoil is mild. The vmax is cheap and accurate and will make a mess of a coyote for most of the year, and then swap them out for tsx when bullwinkle or deer are on the agenda. I know it seems like a light little bullet, but it flies fast and flat, and you'll have a hard time keeping it inside a moose.
