Was playing around trying to get some A-Max's(162gr) to shoot this weekend.

They didn't do so hot.Not what I was wanting anyways, barely SUB MOA groupings some even over MOA.They were well made, consistent and well prepared loads.

I had some 150gr MK's that I had just thrown together 1 grain increments, not real fussy on the prep.Velocities were from 2400-2800 ft/sec. varying loads.Almost all groups were identical in size and very nice to say the least.

All this time chasing groups with the heavier bullets and with minimal effort the MK's just decide to work.Just seems ironic how with all the effort sometimes that you are spoiled just out of the blue.

Think I will be refining some Matck King loads.

Anybody else using them out of a 7mm-08?

Interesting fact: many Match King are tangent ogive while A-Max are secant ogive. Tangent ogive self align in the barrel and tend to be shoot accurately without much load development while secant ogive can have 20% better BC but are seating depth sensitive.

Choose your poison ;) As a note, Berger is working hard on hybrid bullets which should give us the best of both worlds.

I think the harmonics of your barrel are "tuning" better to the 150 grainers. You can prove/disprove this by playing around with different combos of bullet weight and powders. In my experience, a good load, based on bullet weight, will show promise right out of the gate. Sure you may be able to prod another bullet weight to work, but it can be laborious and time consuming. And in the end, it may be a very finicky load...

The barrel is 26" with 9" twist , so it shouldn't be terrible trying to get the 168's to shoot, I may have to go to just a bit slower powder I am thinking though.

If there was a high BC bullet around 150 would be ideal, I think I may will be limited to 600 or so yards with the 150 SMK's for any consistency.

What type of rifle? Maybe the twist is a bit slow????

Maybe the bore is a bit tight or loose. Compare the diameters of the two brands. 0.0005 to 0.001" matters.

You didn't mention the powder but I think H4350 or the Hrn Superformance might be a nice combo to try.

Is the bullets seating true?

Some barrels just don't like some bullets and/or powders. That is why load development is necessary.

Ultimately, you shoot what the rifle tells you it likes.

Rem 700 , Krieger barrel-26" Rem Varmint contour, Henry Remple did the action work and reaming, 9" twist.7mm-08.

Currently using W760, Have a wonderful load for hunting bullets,

42.8 gr of 760
CCI 200 primer
150 grain Scirocco II
Remington brass.
Just a couple thou off the lands.
2750 ft/sec.

This shoots just under half MOA, but I wanted to get a match quality bullet to start practicing target out past the 600 yard area and refining my groups.

I was thinking H4350 or even trying IMR 8208 for a test.

It is starting to look like 150 gr is the favorite, but I feel that I can get something heavier to shoot well, but the 168 SMK's will likely be the last try before I concede to the 150's as being best.I know with just a bit of refining the 150 SMK's will do very well, just think they will be a 600 yard ish type load.

Guess I could do a bit more measuring see if I can find some differences.

I would give H4350, Hybrid 100V a try. IMR8208 is way too fast.

There is little reason why a 162/168gr bullet can't work in the barrel IF the twist is correct.

Sierra, Berger, Hrn would all be on the menu for testing.

She don't like the Hornady's, next will be the SMK's, since they grouped well with the 150's at all velocities, I think they may also work well with the 168's.I have some H4350 on hand so I'll give it a shot.

I get excellent results with Varget, and the AMAX mashed pretty hard into the lands (which makes it much to long OAL to function through the magazine). Speed is about 2650, and I can reliably take down the 1 MOA plates at 600 yards if the wind isn't bad.

Hodgdon lists 8208 as the powder that produces the best speeds with this bullet in this cartridge, and in my experience, this combo does seem to prefer a sharper pressure spike from a powder on the faster side of the spectrum.
