7mm-08 loads

Hi. You have to work up the load for your rifle. No two will shoot the same ammo the same way.
I'd be using IMR4064 or Varget. Both are extremely versatile powders. Used in a great number of cartridges. Certainly not the only good powders though.
 
IMR 4064, Sierra BTSP 140 grain bullets seated .005 off the lands, WW brass WLR primers is a great load in my 7mm-08.

I'm getting over 2900fps out of a 24" barrelled Remington XHR.
 
I use W760 with great results, the rest of the specifics you will have to determine for your own rifle. For hunting I get great accuracy from Swift Sciroccos and great bullet performance on game.

I have had some good groups with W760 and this Tikka but not as good as they should be compared to other rifles in 7mm-08 I have owned in the past.

IMR 4895 and 140 gr Sierra Game Kings seated 0.010 off the lands. I am right at the max charge, I get 2830 fps out of a 22" barrel.
 
I use a 140 TSX over varget for 2900 fps. I don't recall what the exact charge is - I think it's around 41 or 42 grains.
 
imr 4350 46 gr, barnes triple shock 160gr(my ruger hates 140 - 150gr) fed mag primer. they are a stomper load that we worked up to by .25 gr increments, .25 past and we got a hint of primer flatning.
 
From Sierra manual. Accuracy load with 140 gr bullet is 41.9gr W748, with 150gr bullet 41.4gr IMR4064 with normal caveats on working up a load for your rifle. Lyman manual notes 38.7gr IMR4895 with 139gr and 36.7gr IMR4064 with a 154gr bullet. Best accuracy is often found at less than max loads.:cheers:

Thanks for the info - the problem I'm having is with bullet seating depth. The optimum depth makes the rounds too long for the clip and as this is a hunting rig I need to use the clip. - I'll keep working at it thanks again
 
purple - +1, very true. More powder does not equal better accuracy alot of the times, which is why most reloaders i know work up in incremental batches to test accuracy for there rifle.

npowell- what is the max overall cartridge length of your magazine? My dad has been loading for this 7-08 for over 30 years. he has kept some pet loads during this time. if you could tell me the oal, there might be a load that could work for your rig, or at the very least give you a reference point to work with.
 
If you use 2.800 OAL , you would be surprised on the consistency you can get. Just try a few different bullets and let the magic happen.7-08 is gonna shoot well at the worst of times. Do a bit of tuning, watcher' go!!

That is my hunting round, 5 shots, not being fussy.
 
140's really do seem to shine in this caliber.

Only problem is then can still get phenomenal accuracy past 2800ft/sec.

Terrible thing to tell a magnum shooter you can do that with little recoil and 1/3 less the powder!!!:p

The loads I have now 140 gn Noz Bal tips are just a smidge under 2 and 3/4 inches - I could probably squeeze another sixteenth of an inch so 2 and 15/16ths would be the max length to fit in the clip. I'm going to see my brother next week for a hunting trip and he has some info on 150 gn rem bullets that he read an article on some time ago that sounds promising. Keep in touch and thanks.

npowell - was 2 15/16th a typo? i think you meant 2 13/16. just a quick question, what are you using to gauge your oal? when you are dealing with thousands of an inch, most books usually use decimal, at least if i remember right. plz correct me if i am wrong. have you looked at sierra grand slams, i kinda remember them to be a shorter bullet.
