7mm-08 or 35 Whelen for final rifle?

The 35 Whelan is a fantastic cartridge, used one alot when it was still a wildcat cartridge.
Took Moose,Elk and Bears with it.
As far as the 7 08 or 270 goes the 270 has done it all worldwide IMO.

If the question was 7-08 vs 35 Whelen as a single rifle choice, I woudl go 7-08. but in this case your 270 and 7-08 fill the same niche, so one of them should go. Personally I woudl dump the 270 before the 7-08

The way I read the OP's post is that the .270 is NOT on the chopping block... it was either the 7-08 or the .35 Whelen... there are a fair number of people trying to get him to ditch a rifle that he seems to like.

You already have a 270, so ditch the 7mm/08 and keep the 35 whelen.if your looking for a moose/elk rifle , it would be hard to beat the 35 whelen

I would get rid of the 7mm-08 and keep the 35 whelen. Always nice to have the option for a heavy hitter, especially 250gr at 2500-2600 fps. I Had a Ruger Hawkeye m77 SS in 35 whelen that i sold and have regrets about.

I got one in Blued, i decided not to ever sell it as now proberly not chamebred in, but its been so good to me, it now sits in back of the safe in a ugly ramline stock but one day, if i ever want, its there!

Funnily enough i have just sold the brother of the Whelen, the 93x62 aka 36 whelen... an my go to rifle now is the 7mm-08....

i think the OP can find something more middle of the Road to cover both bases in my opinion.....

Dare i say it, 308 or the ol 3006........................... but a real hair splitter, 338 Federal country!!! (i might go there one day)

Thanks for all the responses. I’ll add a caveat to the mix, in that I do not handload. This will change a few tunes I imagine.

I was going to question is you did or intended to. With that in mind I'd dump both the 7mm-08 and .35 Whelen. Your .270 will do anything that needs doing and is easy to find ammo for. I love my 7mm-08 and 35 Whelen but they both shine best with handloads. If you truly feel a bigger gun than .270 is needed for elk and moose a .300 Magnum sounds like your answer. I'd hunt all the game of NA with a 7mm-08 or .270 very happily but I know I am in the minority.

I too say keep the 35 Whelen. It makes a great pairing for the 270.
You are covered for all that walks that you currently hunt or intend to hunt. You have a nice flat shooting rifle for medium big game in open country and a heavy hitter that won't beat you up unnecessarily for large game in the thick cover and/or medium ranges.
As previously mentioned, both rifles are Rem 700's, so triggers and safeties are the same. Actions are the same length of bolt throw. Having both rifles handle, cycle and feel the same breeds familiarity and will add to your ability and confidence when handling and shooting the firearms in the field when hunting. This is a good thing when you are under pressure or the excitement of the hunt. It is amazing what a close encounter with an aggressive black bear, a rutting bull moose, a bugling elk or a big whitetail will do your adrenaline and ability to stay calm and cool! This can, and does rattle many otherwise steady people, when it comes time to put that rifle into action.
