7mm-08 performance from an 18" barrel?

1899...........You must have a high friction barrel for whatever reason,

That is what I think, but it kind of soured me on shorter barreled 7mm-08s. Especially when I have such joy with the 7x57s....:)

I have to say that is a very, very nice little Model 7, and it looks like is shoots ok too!

Maybe I should give another shorter barrel 7-08 a try.

I second that... very sweet little Mannlicher style 7mm-08... keep me in mind if it is ever going "down the road."

I'm the black hole of the firearms market, once they enter my vault they are never seen or heard from again, except under my direct supervision and company. I tried this with women way back and it didn't work out that well for me, but guns are much more forgiving and obedient!! LOL

I've had a 788 in 7mm-08 for about 35 years or so. Velocities with 140 gr bullets are around 2650 fps (depending on which bullet). I consider this a little slow, but it's very accurate and a joy to pack so I can live with it. H414 works best in mine. - dan

That is a little slow... I get 2840 fps with a 139 SST and 49 gr H4350 out of a 20" pipe... have you tried H4350? I find that it is consistently my best medium class powder... it generally tops Varget. What pipe do you have on your Remmy?

I had a custom Remington 7 carbine with an 18" barrel. It was in 243 but the throat was shot out.. I had Ron Smith bore it out to 7mm/08 with a gain twist bore. I found the best load was 45 gr Varget, 140 gr Nosler Partition, av 2890 fps over my Chrony.
Safe in my gun anyway. 46 gr Varget with 120 gr Barnes X gave av 3052 fps, but lost a couple of deer-no expansion- so I quit using them.
I tried different powders but Varget gave the best velocities and accuracy at moderate pressures so I stuck with that.
