So this morning I decided to head down to the range to experiment between Remington and CCI primers. My results were as I expected with the CCI 200 primers yielding a better group.

Here is the loads I tested at 100 yards:
Brass:308 Nosler Brass Necked down
Powder: IMR 4007 SSC
Bullet: 162gr Hornady Match
Primers: CCI 200 and Remington 9 1/2

1 43.5gr powder
2 43.7gr powder
3 44.0gr powder
4 44.3gr powder

The 1st photo shows the Remington Primers and the second photo shows the CCI primers. One thing was very consistent and thats the typical 1st shot being about 1" away from the rest. Load # 1 and 4 with CCI primers yielding the best groups. The big ? is .... in load #4 is that 2 or 3 shots??? im leading and hoping 3 but what do you all think.. These loads will be used just as fun plinking out to 650 yards.

The rifle is a Custom built rifle. 24" Ted Giallard Barrel 1-9" twist, SS Remington 700 action, Pepper Laminate Boyds Gun Stock, Pillar Bedded, and a custom made aluminum Bottom Plate. Its all topped with a Leupold 3-9x40 Canadian VX2 with custom built Turrets. I love this rifle and can shoot much better than i can. I have other loads made up for deer and moose but This load will be used strictly for Plinking..

Thanks all
Josh

It drives me crazy when 2 rounds touch and the third is outside the group. If the flyer is consistently the 3 third shot, no problem, but if its the first, that's not so special. Either way though, the rifle should be sighted for the cold bore shot. If the results of your tests are repeatable, the loads I prefer are the center bull on the top target and the top right bull on the lower. Those are loads I could use, and accordingly the difference in primers offer little advantage over one another, just that each shows a preference for a specific charge weight of that particular powder under that particular bullet.

I'd be reluctant to draw the conclusion that the CCI primer gives better groups:

- you only did one-three shot group per load;
- there are several loads untried in the 43.5 to 44.5 gr range; and
- there are various OALs that can be tried.

What MV's were produced?

Thanks all for the replies. The real only reason i did this test was because I want to shoot long range and my 160gr Sierra game kings are pretty much extinct, so I decided to try match bullets.. Honest I was not to impressed with the results. I was expecting a lot better. My sierras never show a flyer but it's also my hunting round so I don't want to shoot off what I have left of them. 11 I think lol. They have proven to hit the 8x8 plate at 650 with ease. Thought maybe these hornady would be the same. Apon looking at the target again kamlooky and boomer are correct.. That is 2 in the bullseye on the last group.

I agree it's hard to say CCI primers are better then Remington since all of my loads for this rifle are ignited with Remington primers ( which I am fond of) except this load.. The only reason I say I expected this result was because I had the same with with dads .308 and also with my 2 6.5x55 Swedish. If I was not happy with the groups I was getting.. Is would try CCI and they always seems just a little tighter. But that's just my experience.
What I'm going to do next is go back.. Reload 5 of each of the promising loads to see what a 5 shot group looks like. Then decide from there.
As for the coal they we're all set 20 though off the lands..
As for velocity of this round.. I have no idea yet since I do not own a crony.. But i can tell you that my 150 nosler hunting ballistic tips are right around 2800.. 5 shots are within 10fps either side of 2800. That load is 46gr 4007 ssc with a Remington primer in a Remington case. It's my deer round.. My 150gr swift scirocco 2 are the exact same everything.. (Moose)

160gr Sierra is 2650 with 43.5 gr 4007 ssc Remington brass and primer.

Thanks all.. I hope to have this rifle driving tacks here by the end of month

Take care!!!
