Hey all. I'm looking at getting a savage light weight hunter chambered in 7mm-08 to set up as a mountain rifle. I am just wondering what kind of speed a person could be expecting with a 140 gr pill out of its 20" barrel?
Thanks.

My 20 1/2" Husqvarna 7X57 featherweights all got well over 2800 fps with 140 Partitions and 4350. The '57 has slightly more capacity, about three grains, so 2700 should be very doable in the 7-08.

According to my chronograph, a 160 gr Sierra over a stiff load of 760 makes 2700 fps from a short 788, on a warm day. I would expect a 140 to make 2750-2800 depending on your choice of powder. I have a longer 7-08 on a Mauser here now, but I haven't shot it over the screens yet.

Yes, you may want to try RL 17.
It is THE powder in my 7x57 Remington Classic [22" tube]

The throat is long enough in this rifle that I can seat bullets well out.
3004 fps average with the 140 Accubond and very, very accurate.
If I do my part, three shots often touch one another.

I will not mention the charge, since it is irrelevant for the 7-08.
