7mm 08 vs .308

I have and use the 7-08, 308 and 260 on mule and whitetail deer. No noticeable difference between them in the field other than slight differenced in recoil. If I had to choose just one for deer hunting I would likely keep the .260--just because.

I have been doing lots of research for a new deer gun lately,liked the 7-08 but leaned more towards the 25-26 cal. guns, after great deliberation I decided the 25-06 is the way to go for deer

I've never used the 25-06 but I've heard good things, but the down side from what I understand is that you need a longer barrel length for the 25-06 to see full performance than the 7-08. My 7-08 has a 20 inch barrel and I'm getting almost book velocities over a chronograph with H4895, and I find the shorter barrel VERY convenient for hunting. I've heard a 24 inch barrel is recommended for the 25-06, although as I said this isn't first hand experience.

Nope, can't be done according to many experts.

You were seeing things, likely someone hiding in the bushes with some 30 cal 180 grain to do the job right.

I like my 7mm-08 its my favorite cartridge. I have taken 1 black bear, a moose and a deer with it so far. The deer while I was living in BC, the moose and bear here in NFLD. My uncle took his moose with my 7mm-08 as well. This season both my parents shot there moose both spike bulls with my 7mm-08 with great success, all one shot kills using barnes 140gr tsx ranging from 250 yards to 10 yards. I think its a great cartridge and it dose magic on them bowinkles.

If strictly for deer hunting, the only real differnce between the two is it may be harder to find the 7mm-08. Not because it's unpopular, exactly the opposite. I've always wanted a 6.5 so I'd probably try the .260, but thats just me.
