Energy and trajectory numbers on this caliber are pretty nice.

I intended to give my son's a .30.30 as their first gun but the 7mm-08 caught my eye.

Any advice from 7mm-08 shooters?

Yep, I'd go 7mm08 over 30-30 as a starter rifle in a heartbeat. More useful, chambered in a wider variety of guns, accurate, powerful... it's great. Also check out the .260.

I new to the 7mm-08 but I have had good success with mine.

1 Nolser partition @ 140g= 1 black bear
2 hornady sst interlock @ 139g= 2 Whitetails

Its easy to reload, lots of bullet choices, cheap brass, low recoil, easily take moose/bear/deer. Whats not to like.

You can buy the Browning lever rifle in 7-08. It is also available in the smaller compact rifles like the Reminton model 7 and the Ruger compact. I believe the model 7 comes in a youth version as well. Your sons will never outgrow the 7-08. I have used mine for everthing from deer to moose. I prefer the 145 grain speer grandslam but the 139 grain loads also work excellent for deer and blackbear.

Right on.

Another potential lever in the safe

Have a Savage 7mm08 LEVER ACTION.....with handloads, will shoot under 1 inch at 100 yds with 115sierra, 139 hornadys 140 sierra, and 175 gr.Hornadys...

Would highly reccomend this caliber and with lite bullets there is very little recoil
and shooting game at distances, is only limited by the shooters abilities........no doubt in a good bolt action, under one inch/100yds could be the norm.......it certainly isn't with my 30/30 94 Win.....

hs4570...........your mileage may vary

For reduced recoil loads, the 120 grain ballistic tip has a reputation for being a much tougher bullet than one would expect, at least according to the people around the campfire.
I will report my findings after this fall.

Would you guys choose a 7mm over a 30-06 ;)

In a heart beat!!!!!

I have a 30-06 that sits lonely in the safe (5yrs unfired) while my 280AI, 7-08AI and 7-08 enjoy full time use.

In fact, since sheep season I have only packed my 7-08...whacked a bear last night with the 140gr TSX.... bang flop!

The 7-08 is a fantastic round (as is the 7-08AI/284 Win/280 AI)

As good as the medium cased 7mms are, there isnt anything wrong with a 30-06, although it can be argued that a properly loaded 7-08 is just as effective on Canadian game as the larger 30-06 is, which gives more recoil, same trajectory, and heavier rifles (all things being Equal)

;)
