So what the opinions of the 7mm-08 here?

After shooting a .30-06 and find the recoil at the moment (I'm very new to shooting) too high, i'm thinking this round might be it for me: Low recoil, and can be used at around 100 yards for black bear, deer, elk, caribou and moose. Seems it can also be used on wolf & cougar without wrecking the hides at longer ranges.

Any other things I should I know or be aware of?

I had one in a Remington Model 7 SS and I did not like it. Maybe the stock didn't fit well or whatever, but felt recoil was noticeable. The 20" barrel didn't really perform as well as I had hoped - 2700 fps with 140gr bullets and numerous powders. The 160's were moving along at 2400fps.

I'd consider a .270 Win with 130gr bullets. The recoil is quite mild and they kill well.

I have a Tikka T3. Pleasant to shoot for the kids when they were younger and for the wife.

It's the wife's go to gun; knocks down everything from coyotes to elk and her's has. Put on a limbsaver to make it even a softer shooter.

Have a 7-08 loaded with 120tsx's running 3050 fps from a 22" barrel using varget. Would not hesitate to hunt with that combo on everything up to elk/moose. Keep in mind twist rate for your rifle and match the bullet to the use. Flat shooting enough for normal hunting ranges even with the 154s. So really what is not to like. Shoulder a few models before you dive in. You'll find the 7-08 is a fine hunting cartridge.

Alternately try some lighter bullets in the 06. I'll bet you'll find they also make less impact on the shoulder and still fit your bill for the uses you describe. A good solid or premium bullet will hold up better in close and will likely feel the same recoil as these Short Action cartridges. Bullet placement in the vitals will always be key. A 130 or 150 TSX 30 cal will be a pussy cat on the shoulder compared to the heavier 180s. Your call....

I think the 7mm-08 is a great round. Similar to the 7x57, which has taken a lot of big game, including Elephants, Moose and Elk. It has low recoil, hi BC and SD and I think will shoot well beyond 100 yards for NA game, if you do your part.

Was it the rifle you didn't like or the cartridge??

708 is a great all round calibre. good to 300yrds maybe be more depending on the operator. for low recoil and good performance try 120 tsx.

300 yards? That thing shows ballistic charts of 750-1200 ft-lbs at 500 yards.. I've taken animals with 22's that barely hit 100 ft-lbs at 100 yards and just wonder why people understate the ability of 1000ft-lbs?

I'm honestly asking, I just don't know how such a round would be written off at such a short distance?

I have a number of 7mm-08's... It is one of my favorite cartridges... Bears and moose with 154 IB's over Varget and deer with 139 GMX over H4350 and coyotes with 120 BT's over CFE-223... Very versatile and effective caliber.

Reduced recoil ammunition is another option. With some of the new loads coming out for 2014 you can see a 45% reduction in recoil in a .30-06.

I had one in a winchester featherweight. It got sacrificed to fund another rifle. I would buy another one without hesitation! Great rifle, great caliber!

.... fixed it for ya!

why not 308, same casing but less bottle neck on the case due to larger diameter bullet causing less pressure and felt recoil given the same amount of powder is being burnt.

Good round, my uncle used to have a neat Ruger compact M77 chambered in it. I've heard 260 Remington mentioned a number of times as a nice light recoiling round as well. And of course the 270 Winchester kicks a bit less than a 30 06 and will flatten any of the animals you mentioned.

I have a 7mm08 and so does my brother and my nephew,I hand load for all 3 and they all shoot great.140 Nosler accubonds or 139 interbonds work great with re 15 powder,or even better a 140 Barnes tipped triple shock will handle anything that you want to kill.Total of over 40 dead deer and 7 bear and 2 moose will testify that the 7mm-08 will handle anything. Its a great caliber and will preform up to your expectations.
Happy shooting.
a 7mm-08 fan for life3.
