I have build 2 rifles chambered int he 7-300Win mag. You can push 160 Accubonds to 3250 and 180 Berger vld's to 3050 fps. Right now I have an F-class rifle that shoots 171gr Barnes match burners pushed to 3050 and the rifle will shoot in the .2's. I have a "walk around" rifle that I use for hunting and with its 1-9 twist barrel I can push the 150 gr Barnes TTSX to 3300.
As far as a wildcat goes it cant get much easier to load for!!! I use .300 win mag fl dies as a body die and the 7RM dies to size necks and seat bullets (READ AS YOU DON'T NEED EXPENSIVE DIES TO FORM OR LOAD THIS ROUND). If you have a bullet in mind a gunsmith can easily chamber this bullet / round and still have it feed throught the mag. even with the long 180 VLDS.
One of the reasons I built it for an F-Class rifle was to compete with the .284's and not have to hot rod the rounds to get them close to the 2900 fps mark that I have seen the .284 guys do. You can throttle back the 7-300Win and get great brass life and it really doesnt burn a lot more powder than the .284.
As I said to a buddy of mine who shoots a .284................if you use 55 + grs of powder in a 284 to get a 180 VLD to 2900 fps at 60,000 + PSI , would it not make sense to use 72 grs of powder to get the bullet to 2900 fps with a lot less pressure???" In my books the bullets are the same, the bore is the same, what needs to change is the pressure needed from the powder (case) to get to the desired velocity. Bigger case runs cooler and same velocity as the smaller hot rodded case.
Barrel life in theory should be better as you are running less pressure / heat than a max loaded - hotter smaller round.
I have found that retumbo and H1000 are great powders for this round, if you build a rifle make sure to get the 1-8' twist barrel as I have heard that Berger is coming out with a 190 VLD in the near futre!!!
