Hey Guys

Im currently looking into some potential solutions for a future Moose rifle. Would a 7 or 8mm Mauser cartridge be adequate to take a Moose down clean? Any opinions would be appreciated.

As my brother told me once "I put one right in the engine compartment" Talking about a 30-06 big deer kill. He's a mechanic! But yeah the 8mm can be loaded as hot or hotter than a 30-06, which will bring down a Moose no prob. My Dad got a big 1100 lb Moose with his bring back 8mm Mauser back in the Seventies, the first shot and the Moose just shut er down. I mean it just stopped dead in it's tracks standing in the bog. Pops thought he clean missed it. But the Moose knew better about 5 mins later it just keeled over. Damn well killed him in the standing position. True story.

Either one, shoot in confidence. As mentioned already, they will be fine within reasonable range. My Bride and I will be packing one of each you mentioned for a partner hunt (cow moose) this fall.

I have seen Moose drop in their tracks to the 308 Winchester, as long as they aren't wound up before the shot or spooked right after they aren't really that hard to drop.

Will you be handloading or using factory loads?

One thing, you really want a 9.3 Brenneke for Elk they are tough!
took 5 shots this fall with my 30/06 and it just would not go down. found pieces of lung on the tracks but it still ran a long ways!

That is one camera shy moose Nechako!
I don't believe we have heard the story yet either. Time to fess up!
And for goodness sake, pm me with those dimensions for the butt plate so I can be on the look out.:p ;)

OK here's the story.

It was going to get dark soon but we did one of those let's just head down there for a while before heading back to camp type things, little did we know.
My Dad and I spotted a Moose back in the bush so we headed in a bit and saw a Moose standing with it's head and body in some trees.
I thought it was a small bull and my Dad agreed.
As we all know, it's a frustrating situation when you see something with antlers but can't see whether it's immature or not.
Not wanting to take a chance we were just about to leave when the Moose stepped out leaving what we thought were antlers behind.
Before my Dad could say "take it!" the rifle was on my shoulder.
The Moose was going at a slow walk up a hill about 70m away angling slightly away from me and heading for thick cover, I decided to shoot.
When the bullet hit, the Moose stumbled but regained it's footing and disappeared up and over the hill.
This is the first time that an animal has not dropped with my first shot, I was feeling sick at the thought that I had only wounded it.
We couldn't see any blood as we followed the tracks, just scuffs in the dirt.
Almost at the top of the hill, my worries vanished as about 15ft away I could see it down under some trees. I quietly called back to Dad who was a ways behind me, "It's down!"
From where I was standing I shot a just in case finisher, and about 5min after that we took the picture that you see.
The rifle was a 7x57 BRNO ZG-47 using 175gr RN bullets.

Noel, sorry I didn't get back to you. I went to take the pad off but it appears it's not only screwed on but also glued on too. I will PM you tomorrow.

I agree that Elk are an extremely tough animal. I shot one with a .303, and it took mre than one and it ran a LONG way.

Originally 8 mm Mauser was invented as anti cavalry cartridge. At 2000 m bullet still has twice as much energy than needed to kill a horse.

Hey Sig do you know where i could read up on that. 2km is a long shot thats like 50bmg territory, especially to drop a horse. That would make it more than capable.
