OK here's the story.
It was going to get dark soon but we did one of those let's just head down there for a while before heading back to camp type things, little did we know.
My Dad and I spotted a Moose back in the bush so we headed in a bit and saw a Moose standing with it's head and body in some trees.
I thought it was a small bull and my Dad agreed.
As we all know, it's a frustrating situation when you see something with antlers but can't see whether it's immature or not.
Not wanting to take a chance we were just about to leave when the Moose stepped out leaving what we thought were antlers behind.
Before my Dad could say "take it!" the rifle was on my shoulder.
The Moose was going at a slow walk up a hill about 70m away angling slightly away from me and heading for thick cover, I decided to shoot.
When the bullet hit, the Moose stumbled but regained it's footing and disappeared up and over the hill.
This is the first time that an animal has not dropped with my first shot, I was feeling sick at the thought that I had only wounded it.
We couldn't see any blood as we followed the tracks, just scuffs in the dirt.
Almost at the top of the hill, my worries vanished as about 15ft away I could see it down under some trees. I quietly called back to Dad who was a ways behind me, "It's down!"
From where I was standing I shot a just in case finisher, and about 5min after that we took the picture that you see.
The rifle was a 7x57 BRNO ZG-47 using 175gr RN bullets.
Noel, sorry I didn't get back to you. I went to take the pad off but it appears it's not only screwed on but also glued on too. I will PM you tomorrow.
