7mm and africa

I guess you didn't see the elephant culling with the lowly .308Win by game wardens dropping them in 10ft grass with FNFAL's.All one requires is penetration through 3ft of honeycombed bone.A brainshot is a brainshot with a .470 NE or 6.5 MS.It's all gravity after that. Not a chargestopper but fine on undisturbed animals.None required a second shot..................................Harold

I don't know about you, but I'm not terribly impressed with the penetrating ability of the 147 gr 7.62X51, so ya I call BS on that too. Culls are designed to completely eliminate a herd or family group. The trick is that the herd is only undisturbed for the first shot, after that things get sporty. When conducted properly none escape; the trouble has been that culling has not always been done properly. There are some very dangerous elephants roaming around, often adolescents who escaped botched culls, probably conducted by game scouts armed with FAL's, G-3's or AK's, and these elephants will attack people without provocation. When there is an elephant caused fatality, the culprit has often been identified as one who escaped a cull.

I spoke with 3 PHs at the Calgary show, the missus and I are in the process of fine tuning an African hunt. It seems that less hunters are traveling with their own rifles and are using the PH's rifles, so many in fact some PHs charge rental fees on the rifles! I asked about what guns they had on hand for hunters to use. We talked about style and make and eventually got around to cartridges, to a man all had the 7x57 on hand for everything up to the eland where they had their hunters switch to the 30/06. Dangerous game and their personal back up rifles were .375 H&H. I found the conversations enlightening.

7x57

Just had my hunt in RSA took a classy old CZ full stocked 7x57 and a pre 64 300 H&H. Everything that 7x57 hit just kind of dropped and did the funky chicken from warthogs to Gnu the 7x57 just beamed of course using home loads 175gr Nosler Partition and IMR 4350 evey PH in the camp thought that rifle was the cats ass, the 300 H&H was another performer once again just dropping things also with home loads of 200gr Nosler Partition and good old IMR 4350, I took 40 rounds of ammo for each rifle which was a box to much for each rig but you never know if that rifle is going to shoot straight at destination, overweight was not to bad I was 1.5 kilos overweight with 2 scoped rifles in a pelican case but also had knives and cleaning gear a flaslight in the case and 4 locks next time I will take two other classics but I love a 2 gun battery.
