7mm Do all pill in 7mm-08 and 280 rem?? whats your pick

I have tried quite a few different brands/weights of bullets in my 7-08 but the best accuracy was always a 140/139 gr. Sierra Pro Hunter or Partitions shoot about the same on paper but I have not had enough experience with them on moose to say which is better. Pro Hunters are cheaper but Partitions are well...............Partitions.
I tried the 154 gr Hornady Interbonds but I could not get a real accurate load but of course that is just the ones I tried.
By the way it was a 700 I was using.

I've got 3 7-08's, Kimber Rem700 and Savage....I've even used the "infamous" Hornady 139 SST on moose out to as far as 400 yards with superb results. Other common bullets I load for the 7-08 are 140 TSX and TTSX, 140 VLD and 140 Ballistic tip....got some 120 TTSX's that I'm going to try with StaBall 6.5 once the pandemic is over....:)

Flat base too, 100gr Hornady HP, and the Sierras.

Curious, how did those work out? And what powder have you had success with? PM me if you'd like to share further. I used the Sierra's.

(apologies Josh for the hijack, don't know of too many trying this route in this cartridge other than myself for some fun.)

Ronr

I used the Nosler 150 Partition in the 280 Rem., only took one Whitetail, what can I say, I didn't recover the bullet, you cannot go wrong with any of the recommendations, failures would be due to exceptional conditions, example
light weight for caliber, high impact velocities or fragile bullet construction like Bergers.

all this 7mm talk i thought i better stock up on some Woodleighs!

Thanks all for the Replies and appreciate all your info and experiences. Due to the current situation and the LGS closed I went with what I could find online and what seemed to be a good value for a "premium bullet" and ended up ordering the 140gr Federal Trophy Bonded Tip. They are proving to be an very accurate bullet out of the Browning A bolt and moving along at 2750 with IMR4007SSC and just shy of 2900 with H4350 and providing 5 shot groups under 3/4". I will try them in the 280(when it arrives) with a couple different powders I have on hand (RL19, IMR7828) and see how they preform. Im hoping the 140gr at the higher Velocity will provide more reliable expansion and energy transfer while still holding together to give complete pass threw on moose if not be on the far side hide. Hoping this fall will provide good results in finding a good bullets for bother chamberings.

Thanks again for all the replies!!! Stay Healthy and Stay safe everyone!!

have you loaded the sierra pro hunter 120s?
i did but would be nice to hear from other users, especially if you;ve shot some game with them>
i shot some fallow deer and one sambar hind..

I've shot quite a few deer with the 120 prohunters in a 260 Rem. I've loaded the 120/284 cal prohunters in a 7-08 and a 280 Rem. They are very accurate and very fast. I wouldn't hesitate to hunt deer with them.

In my opinion you need two do all bullets unless you are much more wealthy than me. For game in my 7mm's I have used nothing but 160 gr. nosler partitions for 50 years and have never found them lacking. But I like to have a bullet that I can get a bit of trigger time in without spending a buck a bullet plus for practice. My go to practice bullet is the Sierra 160 gr. But then I am frugal .I was going to say cheap but I think frugal sounds better.

I've killed over 35 big game animals mostly using my handloaded 139 grain BTSP Hornadys @3000'/s out of my 280 Remington 700 .

I think you will be really happy with these Josh. Post some pictures if you recover any!

(Varget and N540 have worked very nicely for me for hunting rounds)

IS the 140 Federal trophy bonded tip a re-named Speer Gold Dot? I thought I read somewhere Federal was using those -

No, the gold dot and fusion are the same with minor profile tweaks but same bonding and jacket thickness. I'd choose the Trophey Bonded tip first if moose or elk was a priority, not that the fusion/gold dot isn't capable just the tend to expand very wide and penetrate just a little less because of it.

From what I have read the Trophy Bonded Tip is a variant or an "improved" version of the old Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. They have a solid Copper Base/shank and the front is lead filled and bonded so you get really good low velocity expansion, a good BC and the tip is the most heat resistant on the market. Bass Pro sells them for 44.99/50 which is the cheapest "premium bonded" bullet I can find. Most are over $1/bullet, where these fall under. I will try these this fall and try to remember to post some results if I am lucky enough to recover a bullet.

I’ve shot a lot of fallow deer with Barnes VorTx 120 grain TTSX. They perform well in my rifle. Shots are typically short range and almost always pass through. Very effective, good blood trail. I have also used a 243 for the same thing using Barnes’ 80 gr. TTSX, again almost all pass throughs; however, I found the blood trails were usually poor and I switched up to the 7-08.
