OK I'm not a big/(med) game hunter. I mostly just shoot my .22 and a couple hand guns at the range. I always run into hunters who talk about their hunting guns and the "7mm" has always confused me.

do they mean 7mm 08 or 7mm rem mag?

So far I have just smiled and nodded like I new what they were talking about....

Most of the people that I hear refer to their guns as "7mm" mean the 7mm rem magnum. But there is no universal term for it. It could just as well mean the 7mm-08 or even the 7x57. the 7x57 is known as the 7mm mauser and would have been referred to as "the 7mm" before these other cartridges, but since it is not very popular any more (what a shame) it's doubtful they would be referring to this cartridge.

Like mentioned above, 95 out of 100 people are talking about the 7mm magnum. 4/100 will talk of the 7/08 and the one obscure guy will be referring to the mauser 7. (this guy is akin to the one Boston Bruin fan in a town of Leafs/Habs fans. He's also known as the shyte disturber, cause everyone knows the yellow jersey guy's gonna get it for provokin a riot at every pickup game...........I like that guy come to think of it. And the 7mm Mauser is an excellent round, not much recoil, and lots of speed for a homeroller)

And some of us (a percentage of a percentage) will be referring to a 7x64 or 7x61 S&H or 7mm STW or 7mm RUM. There are a lot of different 7mm's out there. - dan

how true,..there are probably 15 to 20 7mm's that are commercially produced....and let's not forget the ones that shoot 7mm bullets but are not named as 7mm's...like the 284 Win and the 280 Remington..and of course.... the 275 Rigby.:D..and the Lazzeroni 7.21 Firebird and Tomahawk....

The same people that talk about 7mms and 270,and 300s,usually don't know the difference between a cartridge, and a caliber.

A 30-06 is a cartridge,not a caliber.

When I worked at Woolco as the sports guy about twenty years ago I would occaisionally get someone's wife walking in to buy "7mm ammo" from me. I would ask them what kind of 7mm ammo and they would invariably reply "the kind for moose". Next I would ask them what kind of rifle it was, exactly. They would then, almost always, tell me something like, "It's pretty big and heavy, you know, for killing moose and stuff." If they weren't already pissed off with my stupid questions (about half the time they were convinced I was a moron by this point), I'd ask them if they wanted heavier or lighter bullets for their "7mm, moose gun". By this point they would pretty much always be pissed with my glaring stupity and tell me they didn't care if it was heavier or lighter, just as long as it worked in their husband's moose gun.

The strange thing was, this sort of thing only seemed to happen with 7mm's. Nobody ever seemed to send in their wives to buy mystery ".300 ammo" or anything like that. I always wondered what set those "7mm husbands" apart from the other fellows who actually came in themselves.

Around here, if you say "7 mil" everyone assumes you mean "Rem Mag". It's pretty much the standard on sheer volume, so the "Seven by fifty seven" and the "Seven Oh eight" guys are the ones that get to use the modifiers.

In my circle the 7 STW is actually more common, and will probably just just be referred to as "The STW" or the estee tabernac or just the tabernac.

It's also a pretty safe bet that if you say "three hunert" or "three thirty eight" folks will assume you mean "Win Mag". Conversely if you just say "Win-Mag" nobody is going ask to to see your .264, threethirtyeight or fourfiftyeight. They may assume you have them all, they just don't want to see them.;) Just the "Three hunert".

Some things have become the norm. Let the STW, OH 8, by 57, Ultra Mag and other oddballs do the explaining, they were probably looking for a chance to talk about it anyway. No use fighting it.

7mm to me means Remington Magnum. I normally refer to it as the "7 mil Rem Mag" just to erase all confusion.

"7 mil oh eight" and "7 by five seven" are also reasonably popular.

The poor "7 mil Wizzum" seems to be the least popular of that line even though it's a fine performer.

There is only one person I know who owns a 7x64 (obviously a man of impeccable taste) and refers to it as the Brennie.

I've seen more "7 mil Ess Tee Double-yous" or "7 mil Stews", in fact.

Most "7 mil Weatherby Mag" and various Lazzeroni owners refer to their chamberings byt their full name so as to insinuate they have lots of money and love shooting it all away.

"7 mil RUM" or "7 mil ultramag" owners generally like the sound of "ultramag" so use that frequently.

Generally don't here to much about any of the others, of course not counting .280 Rems and .284 Wins which are pretty easily distinguished.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to the 7-30 or 7mm BR in actual conversation.
