So I've had my Spanish Mauser for a few years and always hated the way the sights were 2 feet high at 100yds. The Pyramidal front sight was also stupid, so I've decided to replace the sights with a Williams ramp with brass bead and a peep sight so I can ring the best accuracy out of this almost 100 year old Guardia civil carbine.
Heres the obligatory pic of it in its original form. With some of its straight stocked stablemates.
I tried reloading 140gr for this rifle and accuracy was shotgun like, However once I switched to 175gr Federal factory loads accuracy was very good, about 2" at ~100 yds with the old iron sights. My reloads with Hornady 175g bullets also showed promise. This would suggest my rifle is twisted to like the heavier bullets.
This was a few years ago however and I have since misplaced my load data.
Anyone have any good loads for a 175gr in the Mauser?
I would like to replicate the Factory Federals listed MV of about 2400fps (obviously a bit less in this shorter barreled rifle) as I intend to use this rifle for some tree stand hunting this fall.
I noticed a pretty disparate data on the Hodgdon site for H414 vs. my Lyman 49th edition. The Hodgdon lists a max of 37.0gr for 2119fps and Lyman 44.4gr for 2464fps. Do you think 44gr of H414 is out of line for this 1893/95 Mauser action?
I do have quite a few powders around and would like to use one of the ones I usually stock, H414, H4895, and Reloader 15 are my preferred choices.
