7mm Mauser??

Custom built on a 1903 Springfield action. Shoots 1 inch groups all day with factory ammo. I have been using the Remington 140gr Core Lokt but it shoots the Superformance Hornady just as well.

I have two rifles chambered in it, and one more on the way. It is my favourite all-around cartridge (with the 30-06 :)), and no, I never have any trouble finding factory loads for it. My rifles seem to prefer the heavier bullets. You need to experiment with it. It will drop anything in North America. Handloads can really stretch the old gal's performance, but I've been so happy with the performance of Prvi Partizan commercial 173 grain SP's that I don't bother to reload for it anymore.

As others have said, many discerning hunters know a thing or two, and most will praise the 7x57's moderate recoil and efficiency:

I like to reload all of my calibers, so i will probably buy 175 grain bullets for it.

7x57 is my favorite hunting cartridge. The recoil is light and in my rifles it's very accurate. I've taken several deer and moose with it and never had to go looking for any of them. I use factory loads and the performance has always been excellent.

Just another note on the very fine 7x57.
If you use factory ammo, the North American loadings tend to be on the "wimpy" side.
To exploit the potential of the 7x57, using Factory ammo, you almost have to buy European made ammo.
Norma, RWS, PRVI & Lapua all load this cartridge up where it belongs.
If you load your own, then there is no problem, obviously.
I shoot 140's at around 2900 and 160's at around 2700.
Regards, Eagleye.

I can vouch for the effectiveness of the 162gr KS load from RWS. :)

Eagleeye - have you ever tried the 175's? With RL17?

The 7x57 needs no introduction amongst savvy hunters.
Effective, mild-mannered and usually quite accurate.
IIRC, it was Eleanor O'Connor's favorite chambering. [Jack's wife]
Regards, Eagleye.

Do you remember Jack O'Connor writing about all the hunting exploits of the Shah of Iran's brother - using his 7x57 all over the world?

I miss Jack!

I have never loaded a 175 grain bullet for my 7x57.
However, I have some RWS factory ammo loaded with the 173 grain bullet, and they sure do shoot well.
Never took any game with them, but would not hesitate on anything on this continent.
I love RL 17 for the 140's and 150's though.

I was reading about the 7x57 last night, and there was considerable praise (in Africa) for the 173 to 175gr RN bullets at 2300-2350fps. They were considered "utterly reliable" on even heavy plains game. I looked up some loads in my Nosler #4 manual, and found that several powders can give you that velocity with less than 40gr charge. In a 7.5lb rifle that gives you slightly more recoil than a .243 Win.

The ballistics of that bullet means it will expand out to 300 yards and works well with a 200 yard zero. What a fantastic low recoiling load - and one that is suitable for most of our game in North America.

I may have to get another 7x57!
