hi their

ive got an oprotunity to buy either a 7mm rem mag or a 7mm/08 in a bolt action tikka. i would like a rifle that i could take to the range and develpoe some handloads for it and also hunt deer ,black bear, and moose. Are these enough gun for large game? and how bad is the recoil? im 135 pounds so i dont want a gun that will kill my boney shoulders lol

thanx
matt

The 7 rem mag will do all you want although it doses kick more then the 7/08.

Both are good for all game you will face in Ontario.

.............i was comparing the two in my reloading manuals and with a 140 grain bullet it looks like a fella gives up only 150 fps with the 08 while using around 10 grains less of powder. H4350 to be more specific. The Rem mag can't be very efficient if thats the case??? I am awaiting Bartel with all his ballistic mumbo jumbo now.:D

sounds like you're a good candidate for the 7-08.....the 7Mag might not be much fun for developing loads...135#'s and all:)

I usually don't advocate buying a long action rifle chambered in a short cartridge but if you're stuck with the Tikka choices...go for the 7-08....

now...where's todbartell?....:D ...and 280Ackley?....:) I wonder which cartridge these guys will suggest...?

If you put a real heavy scope, bipod on the 7 mag it will help, but then your lugging a rifle around. As for the 7-08 if your a good hunter, Moose will not be a problem under 200 meters maybe 300 if the shot is very well placed. The 7-08 is a sleeper , as it catches up with .308 ballistics , and does very well down range. With all the great bullets out there My vote for your size is the 7-08:D

I've shot Moose with the 7mm-08 and they died just fine;)
In the Rifles you've suggested the recoil of the 7-08 will be 1/2 of the 7 Mag....the choice is yours:D

Go with the 7mm-08 they are pleasent to shoot have wicked knockdown power on deer, and I wouldn't hesitate to take it moose hunting with the proper loads.

I have owned two 7mm-08s and a few 7mmremmags.I have killed moose.deer and bear with both, but the extra 300fps or so that the 7mmremmag produces does come in handy at longer ranges. If you are shooting at less than 300 yards the 7mm-08 is a great choice.

7MM or 7-08

I think at 135 lb the 7-08 will do the job. I have a young friend Mike (age 19) that only weighs 100 lbs, he shoots a Remington 710 in 270 and he got his first moose at 300 yards with it. I am a little jealous and proud of him because he got his first moose at 19 and I am 50 and haven’t got one yet. Because of his size, he now wants something better that will get the job done is compact, and not brutal to shoot. I just had a new shorter action Remington 700 BDL barreled up from 6mm to 7-08 that I can’t wait to shoot. I have to shoot liter rounds, as I have a spinal injury, and heavy recoil short-circuits my ability to walk.
I am going to get Mike to try out my 700, in 7-08 when I go to the range.

Question about the Tikka, can the stock be shortened if they are synthetic? If you are of average height it won’t matter. The comparison of ballistics in one of my books "Cartridges of the World" shows the 7mm magnum and a 7-08 with 140-grain bullet differs only about 200 feet per second, and 200 pounds of muzzle energy. Two hundred feet, or pounds of energy, wouldn’t really matter to a deer or moose if the shot were well placed.

I am a 7X57 and 7-08 fan (I have 10 or 12) so my opinion might be prejudicial, but then I dislike getting beat up shooting at the range. As another member noted the savings of 7-08 in reloading is a plus when looking at the cost of shooting. The 7-08 is pleasant to shoot and a sleeper, as pointed out by another member.

Go with what fits you, is within your budget, it's appealing to look at, and not because it's a status symbol.

My vote is go with the 7-08.

This is not true. The newer reloading manuals are notoriously mild with their 7mm RM loads. This has come up before on the discussion board. I've owned both and can tell you that the 7mm-08 can not come that close, if both are loaded to the max. The 7mm RM can get 400fps more than the 7mm-08 can with a 140gr bullet. In fact, the 7mm RM can get 50-100fps higher velocity with a 175gr than a 7mm-08 can with a 140gr.

Now this isn't to say that the 7mm-08 isn't a good cartridge, it is. It kills well and has mild recoil. But it is not even close to the 7mm RM. It's kind of like comparing a .308 to a .300 WM.

Not kinda, it IS!!
Who in their right mind would think that the two are even remotely comparable ??

And inside of 200 yards, where most hunters make their shots, I doubt the game will know the difference. [If the shooter does his part, of course. ;) ]

This is true, especially on deer.

Mjcurry asked about the two, saying he needs to decide between them. I'm just saying that its like comparing apples to oranges. I'm not disrespecting the 7mm-08, as I like it and really like the 7x57. I'm just saying they're different, that's all.;)

thanx for the info guys! ill prolly end up going with the 7 mm/08 and some sort of scope.ill be hunting deer and bear mostly anyways and the shots will be inside of 200 yards so it seems like the logical choice. thanx again!

the 7-08 can be considered a near equivalent to the grand old 270 Winchester with 130's and 140's...which next to the 30-06 maybe (OK, and the 30-30 and the 303 Brit),..is one of the most experienced deer/moose getters out there...7-08 all the way...I've had a couple 7mm Rem Mags...and it's probably one of the best "all 'rounders" for NA game that the average guy can shoot well....but for hunters who take pride in thier ability on "hunting" game , rather than sniping it at a distance, the 7-08 will work just fine IMHO.

7mm rem

A 7mm rem is a definite step up especially with heavier bullets, but recoil is more, at 135lb you might stay with the 7mm-08 or at least see if you know someone who has one to shoot (7mm rem) and go from there.
