7mm Rem Mag and .223 Rem compatible powder?

I have only reloaded 9mm pistol rounds to this point in my hobby . . . But I would like to start reloading 7mm Rem Mag and .223.

I am wondering if there is a powder that will work well for both.

I am most concerned with the accuracy of the 7mm and will be using the .223 reloads mostly for plinking.

My motivation for this is simply to be as streamlined as possible - I'd rather not have a multiple brands of containers littering my limited space! (also, less chance of using the wrong powder)

FYI I will be using middle weight projectiles for the most part . . . 50-55gr 223, 145-160gr 7mm

Bring up the Hodgdon loading site on the web.
Look up the 223 loadings, with the bullet weights you want to use.
Print it out.
Look up the 7mm loadings with the bullets you want to use.
Print it out also, then compare the two, looking for suitable matches of powder to use.
 
I think you should buy 2 different powders for the besf results.

You would have to be shooting very light bullets in the 7mm, and at least 69gr ones in the 223 to get any powder to work in both cartridges. Varget is probably the only Hodgdon/IMR/Win powder to cross over, but only for the lightest 7mm bullets. I'm not sure you would be happy with the results.

For the 223 you could try H335, H322, benchmark, TAC, IMR8208XBR, or something from Alliant or Vitavhouri.
7mm you could try IMR or H4831, H1000, Hybrid 100v, reloder 19 or 22, and others.

I like H335 in my 223 with 50gr bullets, but do not have any experience with the 7 mag.
 
2 powders for sure. You wouldn't expect great results loading 9mm and 44 magnum with the same powders, sure it would probably work, but not as good as using the right powders. .223 is a small capacity case, which does well with fairly quick powders. 7mm Rem Mag is a Large Magnum capacity case that will excel with fairly slow powders. I'm sure there's powders that could safely be used in either, but I doubt there's any that would be described as good for both.
 
Your .223 and your 7mm mag are worlds apart in their powder requirements given the small case of the .223 vs the voluminous case of the 7mm mag.

I use Varget in both my .223 and .30-06, but I'm sure it's ideal for neither (but probably better for the .223).
 
I reload 223 Rem, 243 Win, 308 Win and 270 WSM and ended up using Benchmark, Varget, H4350, H4831 and Retumbo!

If you want to keep things simple using Varget for 223 Rem and H4350 (or H4831) for 7mm Rem Mag.
The most versatile is Varget but you're really asking for trouble if you load heavy 7mm bullet with this powder!

Thanks for all the input! It was worth a try! I guess having three different powders isn't so bad. I'm thinking H1000 for the 7mm and Varget for the .223 because, like most Canadians I like to shoot in temps from +25c to -20c :) those powders seem appropriate?
 
Since powder isn't reusable and you only get X number of loads per pound and then you have to buy another pound anyways there is no savings in using one powder for both and like others have said the compromise means disappointing results in both. It really only comes down to spending an extra $30 now vs some point down the road.
 
I've been researching my ass off about reloading the 7mm lately and a sure winner is supposed to be reloader 22. With 160 gr ammo it's apparently very accurate and fast.

My last 100 rounds were with IMR 4831 but I'm not getting the accuracy I think I should be getting from it.

Google "7mm rem mag reloader 22 160" and read all that you find. I think it may convince you too.
