7mm rem mag... I don't get it.

After retiring my old .30-06, I bought a 26" bbl M70 CRF in 7mmRM. It worked fine for several moose and deer. Then one day while I was calling moose in a remote timbered area, a large grizzly decided the "cow moose" he heard would be a great source of protein prior to denning up. After that extremely hair-raising, close range encounter, I decided that the 7mm just wasn't my cup of tea. I switched to a .338 bore for my grizz country moose hunts and a .270 for open country deer. I think that a 24" bbl .280AI would be every bit as useful as a 7Mag in a lighter handier package.

A shooting buddy of mine duplicates 7mmRM velocities in his 24" 280AI, with less powder, and zero signs of excessive pressure.

280AI seems to be hyper efficient in turning powder into speed.

I have owned a few 7mmremmags and had no difficulty exceeding 3200fps with 140gr bullets.A 30-06 will not match that velocity with bullets of the same sectional density. As such, the 7mmremmag will shoot flatter than the 30-06.However,I myself prefer the 7mmstw that shoots even flatter, and with less wind drift with 140gr bullets than my 257wby did with 100 gr bullets(both using handloads).

I can get 3350 (hot) with 140s (H 4831)
3173 with 160s ( rl 22 )
2950 with 175s ( rl 22 )

OOPs i added an extra 100 fps lol!!!!

I get 3250 from my 140s

Well interesting, I own both also. I have owned the 30 06 for many years and have taken many a game with it. I just inheritaned a 7mm rem mag and have only killed paper. So I have this conversation with myself many times(whats better?) At times I think get rid of the 7mm and get a 338, but I have a 375 so am i gainning. I think the 7mm would be a great elk killer but so is the 06. I think the best thing to do is keep them all and get the 338.

Use whatcha brung!
In 7mm I likes me 7X64 (try gettting ammo for that down at the Co-op!)
In 30ish cal me likes .308 Winchester, even though it is not the "mighty" 30-06, it does its job if I do mine.

Anyway, REAL men use lead bullets driven at sensible velocities by black powder.

i just sold my 7mm mag, i think it comes down realy to preferance, a 308,30-06,and 270 for 90% of hunting out there will do the job perfectly, i think people put to much bravado into the heavy hitter big magnum barrel burnner's, not saying they don't have a place and can be very usefull especially on big game, i know of guy's back home who have one rifle in 300 win mag and only hunt deer and wonder why i can put down deer faster with a 308 or 270 it's all about choosing the right bullet and velocity for animal density, sometimes a 300 winmag just puts the hole clean through a light skined deer and the 270 will do more internal damage thus killing the animal quicker and less painfully.

anyway the magnums have there use but now days you can load a 30-06 up to simaler velocities as a light 300 win mag load, and there realy and truely isnt a animal in north america you cant take with 308,30-06,or 270.

7mmRM

7mmRM is a popular caliber because it performs admirably with moderate recoil. I have one but the answer here should not be the reductionist argument of which is better but rather a more generous inclusive acceptance of many excellent calibers to use as the mood moves you. A broad choice of rifle calibers is really the best answer, get out there and find another one you really like, life's way too short to miss out on at least SOME of the good things in life.
Mortguage something and buy another one, it's the right thing to do.

It's a shame you've got such a small gun room:D
Believe me, it's not a small room, it's just that I see absolutely no need for a case as big as that , a brake, or a rifle I can't pack around.
A big, fat over rated POS IMO.
Big rock killer, that's all.
I looked at getting a MacMillan in about 1982, and after reading about them and talking to some people in the know stateside, I new it was not a rifle for anything but show.
I wouldn't own one as a target rifle, and I cetainly wouldn't be bother owning one as a hunting rifle.
I shoot too much to pour powder down one of those things to do the same thing at one mile that a 7WSM sinilar rifle can do on a target, unless it's a rock - Big Whup.

7mm

i hunted with a 7mm rem mag for about 14 years, never had a problem dropping my deer or bear out to 200yrd. recently bought a 300 wby mag that i already trust more at longer range and bigger game, but would not hesitate to buy another 7mm(kicking myself for selling it actually)
personal preference is what it boils down to, i think

Years ago I finally decided what to buy for a hunting rifle
30-06
Went into the store and came home with a 7mmRem Ruger
Why?
It was there at a good price
I've shot a lot of game with it and trust it to do the job
Still don't have my 30-06 , but maybe , someday

I've seen moose killed cleanly at 400 with the 7mm Rem Mag. The shooter picked a big rock for a rest, and the moose dropped before he could load another round.
The hit was behind the shoulder, and exited the off side without a lot of meat damage. I've no experience with it at short range, but I suspect a lot more damge would be the case.
It's as capable as any other and fairly accurate to boot.
