.7mm rem mag limmitations

Hornady shows only 59.8 grs. H4831sc with the 162 gr. for their max load. that there is one mild load. they show 61.0 grs. of H4831 with the 154 gr. as a max. that is about 6 grains under the real world max in a modern rifle in good shape.

Weak handload data is what handicaps the 7mm Mag and makes it seem like nothung more than a 270 or 30-06.

Work up from below and in slow increments with a chrony helps tell the true story with the 7mm Mag and its potential...

What Tod says is true...

The 7RM is one of those cartriges that can get obscene pressure spikes out of the blue, for some reason.

So much data is loaded down for it.

A careful handloader, paying attention to his chrono, and of course any over pressure signs like a sticky bolt- Can often well exceed the loading data for this cartridge.

I would not sugest exceeding published loads if you are new to loading.

If you are a newbie, & are a glutten for punishment by all means get a 7mm Mag. It will kill anything on this continent. But it is not needed. If all you are going for is Deer & Moose the time tested 30-06 is No 1. Ammo is everywhere, you can get loads for varmits to moose to even grizzly's. You have to shoot the gun & magnums do bite back. If you are an expeirenced shooter there are lots of pro's & cons to shooting a magnum. Magnums burn more powder, are louder,More recoil. They also allow you to hit an animal futher out [within reason]. I shoot a 7mm Mag & a 300WBY. I am used to the recoil & am covered from small game to the very large stuff. But if i had to do it with one gun the 7mm Mag would be it. The only reason i shoot the Wby is because it was willed to me when my dad died& i don't do that too often [cost lots to reload].Good Luck in your choice :?:
