7mm Rem. Mag. not living up to it's billing

IMO a 7mm Mag is able to push a 160 grain bullet at least 2950 fps out of a 24" tube with a good charge of RL22, H4831, 7828, H1000, RL25, Retumbo. With a 26" tube even 3050 fps isnt out of the question

120s @ 3400 fps, 140s @ 3250, 150s @ 3150, 175s @ 2900 would all seem like a sensible place to stop in a 7mm Rem Mag. It certainly has the powder capacity to do it. Add enough of the right fuel and it should come together.

As far as efficiency goes the 7mm isnt on top, cartridges like the 270 and 280 shine more. You get within 200 fps of the 7mm Mag with 15 grains less powder.

What do you think of 71gr. of H1000 and a 160 only doing 2900fps?(do not reuse this load it's likely too hot in many rifles)
And well accuracy is nothing to get all excited about, so it's time for a change.
And like I said first off the 7 R.M. is very capable but right from the giddy up I was'nt too turned on by it and with that sort of mark against it I knew I'd be going the project route.

I'm pleased to here some guys are getting waht could be claimed as magnum performance, but I dont think 15 grains and 150 to 200fps is really worth it.

no, its probably not worth it. 160 gr @ 2900 fps, well thats only 50 fps less than could be expected, and you only tried one powder for speed, so who knows what could be achieved with more handloading :)

Nope Todd I tried 3 powders. Read the first post
IMR 7828
Imr4831(150's)
H1000
I did not go down the Allient route since their powders are like hen's teeth around here.
H1000 was the best performer out of what I tried, both for accuracy and
velocity.

My SAKO 7mm mag has a 24" barrel and gets 3050 fps with both 154 gr Hornadys and 160 gr Partitions using AmmoMart surplus H450.

Sure wish they still had that stuff! :)
I still have 10lbs of that stuff, but don't think I'll be buying a 7mag to shoot it in. I'll have to try it in my 270Win. instead. :)

Out here on the plains, most animals can't tell the difference between 2800fps and 2900fps, I'm not sure about ELK though, some people say they are very smart.

Why would you need 2800fps and not say 3400fps? or 2100fps for that matter? I think you're all caught up in the numbers game, and it doesn't mean squat, when the animal is sighted....most shooters can't hold steady enough off hand to take advantage of knowing the diff. of 100 fps.

Prosper hit it, I already have a 284 that does exactly what is needed therefore, I see no need to hang onto a magnum that burns just more powder.
And what a better excuse to do some wildcatting and experimenting. And if the experimenting does'nt do what I hope, I'm sure I can cook up another wonderful but goofy idea for the action.
But you know gang the whole thread stayed so civil I am begining to wonder if actually we can learn form our past indiscretions, and who knows maybe some of the NooBs that read this actually got something from this.

It works great in the 270 and the 280. Rodger Dodger even uses it in his 338 with 250 gr Partitions. :D

You can always rechamber it to 7STW. Then you will have a slow STW instead! I've had a half dozen customers do just this. Strangely, all rifles were Remington 700's. @900 would be a nice velocity for 175's. Regards, Bill.

I averaged 3160fps with 66grns H4831 using the 154gr Interbond in my Savage 7mm RM (24"). No pressure signs.
Is that the old stuff or the new SC stuff?
Have you chronied that or are you guessing?
I'd surely like to see this for sure. I'll PM you about a get together

I have owned about 7 or 8 M700's in 7mm Rem Mag. A couple were very early models with the stainless barrels, a couple were rather recent manufacture, and the rest from somewhere in between. All had 24" barrels. With 160 Partitions, I expected 3000 and pennies with old Norma 205, and the later Norma MRP. Also doing well were H4831, MR 3100 and Reloder 22. A couple of these rifles would max out at just under 3000, but not a lot. The 150's were good for about 75-100 fps more. My present 700, a Classic does 3100 with the 150 with about 7-8 different powders, but shoots the most acurately with IMR 4831. Factory loads are all over the place, depending on the maker. You might have a "slow" barrel, but it's not particularly common. Regards, Eagleye.

Yup, chronied. Powder and bullets are new, brass is once fired.
