The question is, "What turns your crank?" If you want a flat shooting small bore the 7 mag is tough to beat in that it is flat shooting, accurate, and affordable. You already have a 7 STW and a .30/378, so you have pretty much covered what can be done with the 7mm and .30 caliber bore sizes, unless you are looking for something a little different like a long range, walking, varmint rifle, in which case the 7 mag would be a decent choice, but perhaps not as good as a .25/7mag (.257 Weatherby). But if you want a reach out and touch round that has the down range power to impress big game once it arrives, the .338 Edge might be the best of your option.

Build the Edge, you know you want to. Besides it's a lot of fun, assuming some weight and a brake. I had my boy popping rocks out to 650 yards, a couple weeks before he turned 14. He describes the recoil as an "event" which is about as good a description as any. It's not that it hits the shoulder very hard, because it doesn't, but there is a whole lot going on. A sound wave sweeps you, and grass gets flattened about 30 feet to each side. Those big 300 grain SMKs are really hard on rocks, and you can see them hit in the scope.
Speaking of 300 grainers, if you use them you will most likely be shooting it as single shot. I know 3 other guys playing with the cartridge, and the COLs are right at 4.000". I'm jumping mine a mile, and getting 3.900". My memory is a little fuzzy, but if I remember correctly throating for the 250s and mag length had the 300s crammed into the case past the ogive. Something to think about anyway.

My light one is 8-1/2 pounds....Recoil is very quick.
Lets not beat around the bush here....This rifle could hurt an inexperienced shooter.
I had a brake fitted (for load development and playing around) and it does make recoil quite mild, but IMHO the brake has no place in the hunting field.

jtoews80 If I were serious about building a 338Edge for general purpose hunting I would have the scoped rifle finished between 9.5 and 10 pounds. Otherwise unless you shoot 416's for fun (I do) long range precision will be a pipe dream.

My heavy 338 Edge (18 pounds if I remember correctly) is more fun than should be legal! The 300SMk delivers like few others at extreme range.

The AV may or may not have enough rail material to allow the round to feed (well). Your next problem will be the follower...What will you do here?
The Ultra case is really fat and I have seen some terrible attempts to get them to feed.
Take your rifle to a good gunsmith and have him look at the project.

My Edge weighs 17 pounds. It's about as far from a general purpose hunting rifle as you can get, but it's very capable and a lot of fun. I wouldn't want a light one, and I actually do shoot a .416 for fun.
