Lookin for an opinion on the right powder choice for a 7mm RM. I have some IMR 4350, and some 162gr SST's but my rifle doest seem to like them, as Ive been working it up, the accuracy has gotten better. 60gr is max with this bullet/powder combo, but it will only shoot 1.87 MOA. Ive been reading up that some guys are up to 63-64gr with this combo and printing off some great results. No pressure signs, great accuracy (under 1" @100 yards) and some sweet velocities. Do I dare keep going up, stay at the max, or try a different powder/bullet combo? Brass is winchester, with federal magnum primers. Going to see if the 60gr with a larger OAL will help anything first.

Thanks in advance!

I have two loads that are fantastic in my Ruger M77 in 7 MM.

162 grain SST pushed by 63.0 grains of RL22 with Winchester large rifle Magnum primers

162 grain SST pushed by 61.0 grains of IMR4831 with Winchester large rifle Magnum primers

Both loads I can get rounds touching at 100, and almost touching at 200, depending largely on me. MOA shooting, at least for my rifle.

IMR 4831 works well and have had good results with imr4350. You might want to try a different bullet as not all rifles shoot a boat-tail very well. You could also check the bedding and crown.

With the 7mm Rem Mag and 160-175 grain bullets, IMR 7828 is your friend, with RL22 close behind..

For the lighter pills, IMR 4831 works great.

Regards, Dave.

Eagleye nailed it...Slow burning magnum powder for a magnum cartridge...7mm Remington Mag and IMR 7828 were made for one another.

IMR 7828 will yield 300fps more velocity then IMR 4350 when loaded with your 162gr bullet...IMR 7828SSC is real nice to work with too.

Going to try seating bullet closer to the lands and see where that gets me. If that doesnt work, I bought a box of 150gr corelokts to test out and see what happens

Starting to think its more of a rifle problem, first shot is always 3" high, other 2 are bang on(height wise), but still not grouping good. After 4 shots they start going in a string pattern up and down. From what Ive read thats a stock problem. I know the gun isnt free floated, so that may help

I've gotten great accuracy with IMR 4350, but typically I can swim faster. My current 7mm seems to like the old style 7828, H1000 is also a good one.

I'd change bullets right off the bat. It may be lack of patience in my old age, but I'm finding that its cheaper in the long run to sell or rebarrel poorly shooting rifles than to fight with them for any length of time. A barrel that shoots 2" with the cold shot 3"s outside of that is a needs a blind-date with an action wrench.

1:9.25 twist and just off the lands. I seated a bullet long, chambered it, and backed it off a hair. Couldn't tell you exact numbers though
