7mm Rem Mag to 7mm STW

Did you know that you can just take a regular "off the shelf" 7mm rem mag and send it to a gunsmith and he/she can cut the chamber for a 7mm STW using the same barrel?

Agreed.....good point! waste the barrel then order a krieger 28 inch finished,put on a nice muzzle break soo you can spot ur own shots,and have at er!!

I find that a 26" barrel handles well in the field, I wouldn't go any longer. As for the muzzle brake, the noise isn't worth it. Even with plugs and muffs, I find it too loud, for any amount of shooting.

i totally agree with you.....you have a a choice is this a hunting rifle..26 in or a 28 in target,with muzzle break!

It requires setting the 7mm Rem Mag barrel back a bit so when you cut the new STW chamber the neck cleans up properly. Often factory 7mm Mag necks are larger in diameter than the new STW reamer cuts... (or the shoulder diameter is off)

I wouldn't consider an STW on a barrel less than 26 inches and even then it won't perform close to what a custom 28 inch barrel will.

I've done this a couple of times, never had an issue with the necks (lucky I guess), but I did have one chamber that left a just visible ring in the stw brass where the shoulder of the 7 RM brass used to be. Was just cosmetic, but still. As to the barrel length I agree that 26" is probably the best compromise (28" on a Ruger #1), but with the right powder I've seen 3200 fps with 160 gr Noslers out of a 24" bbl. - dan

I have done several and one left the shoulder ring you mentioned Dan, from a slightly over size 7 mag original chamber. Never noticed the neck thing Dennis, maybe just lucky or didn't really look for it.
One more thing, don't try this with a Ruger 77, it won't work, the action is NOT long enough........Mod 70, Howa/Vanguard, Rem 700, Sako, no problem, but NOT a Ruger..............

Now that I think more about it ... on the STW it's mostly the shoulder thing that screws up the chamber. It's been a long time since I did one... I was confusing the neck problem with another 7mm conversion I haven't done in a long while - a 7x57 to .280 Remington.. the 7x57 necks are large...
