7mm Rem Mag vs 338 Win mag

Go with the biggest cartridge you can handle. For most, that's 308/30-06/7mm RM range. For some it's a 6.5x55, or even 243. For others, it's more.

But be honest. MOST guys THINK they can handle more recoil than they actually can.

My buddy has a Rem ADL 7mm Mag and it's a great gun but kicks pretty good. I have a Browning BAR in 338 Win Mag and I can shoot it all day long, not much felt recoil. Same vote as the others 7mm if you're gonna stay with deer, elk, the occasional moose, you can always run heavier ammo for moose and bear. The 338 is killer on our continental big game it's the smallest of the "big" cartridges and gets good ballistics out to 300 yrds maybe a little more with some tuning and you can get 180grn bullets for medium game. I vote 338 Win Mag.

I own a really nice 280 that I love to carry, but concerns about grizzlies led me to also invest in a 358 Norma. The 358 gets carried if I am hunting elk or moose in areas where grizzlies live.

To steal a line, the 7mag is just right but the 358 is just in case. It makes me feel more comfortable in the thick stuff along streams, and I also sleep better in the tent with the Norma beside me.

With today's bullets the smaller cals do really well opposed to 20 years ago.

IT'S ALL SHOT PLACEMENT

As soon as Nosler builds a 30 grain 17 caliber Partition I'll have the perfect bear gun.:D

Smaller to a point sure........

another kemo sabee heard from- the only thing i lament is the discontuation of the speer 275 grainer- that was the perfect bullet for the 338- better b/c and s/d than the 250

The .338 is so much fun to shoot that everyone should have one. Recoil just isn't that bad with lighter bullets--say the 225 grain Accubond--and ballistics and terminal performance are spectacular. The best of the 'all around' cartridges IMHO.

I too have been considering getting back with the 338wm as i hunt moose regularily and elk yearly. With that said my 7 rem mag still is my go to gun for these species and has never failed to disappoint(even with some more classical tolls to choose from). Load 160 premiums and go hunting. I have also had awesome results from the 140 barnes TSX on both critters from my rem mag. Nothing like blazing speed and terminal performance to give a guy the option to load her up and hunt near anything. (please bare in mind grizzlys just aren't a concern in Sask!!) I am now considering by passing the 338wm and going with 375H&H in lieu so that I am ready when i finally do book that african trip!

I have harvested more then a few elk and moose with the 7mm rem mag as well as others (which includes a 338wm). No doubt the 338wm is the better critter specific tool but as far as putting meat in the freezer well as i said the rem mag is still my goto CF.. ;<)

If you reload....I would go with the 340Weatherby...Just a little more bang for your buck...

225grs. at 3000fps will knock anything on it's ass....In Canada anyway;)

Russ...

I have a 7mm and my hunting buddy has a 338 big difference in recoil maybe brcause he loads his own rounds. he can hardly hit paper with it he flinches so much. hes 6'4 260.

Flinching is not a matter of physical height and weight, it is a state of mind. I recently watched a fellow flinch when shooting his .223  He closes his eyes and jerks then gun back as if it was recoiling.
