I currently shoot a 7mm Rem mag in a M700...have been toying with the idea of rebarrelling it to a 7mm stw. Any input on the STW? Anyone use the STW on a regular basis?
you will burn 20 grains more powder (25 less rounds per lb of powder)
you will have shorter barrel life, more recoil, and more muzzle blast, and in theory it will be less accurate (by a hair, all things being equal)
you would gain 18 paces of point blank range (301 yards vs 319 ~ 160 gr. Partitions @ 3050 fps & 3250 fps ~ +/- 3" PBR).
energy difference at 400 yards is 280 ft-lbs, and the 7mm Mag drops 3" more @ 400y
I personally would stick with the 7mm Rem Mag unless you do alot of open country shooting and have alot of shooting skill to take advantage of the STW's added reach.
go with the STW and if you don't like it sell it to me. What do you plan to do with it. If it is for long range shooting over 500yards get atleast a 28"barrel.
I have owned 6 - 7mm Stw's and 5 - 7mm Rem Mags over the past 10 years or so. The STW has a distinct advantage over the 7 Mag at ranges over 375 yards, so If you are shooting way out there, The STW is for you. If most of your shots are inside of 400 yards, Then the advantage is not that great. Any I have owned, the accuracy was at least on par with the 7 Mag, and a couple were astoundingly accurate. Regards, Eagleye.
From my limited experience with two STW's, it is perhaps the fussiest cartridge I have ever worked with. It is 150 fps or so faster, but unless all my shots were on the far side of 400 yards, you couldn't give me one. Even then, I'll take a 300Wby any day over a STW if you are going to the trouble of rebarreling. Easy to work with, and extremely flat shooting. If a 165 triple shock at 3375 isn't flat enough, I don't know what is.
IMO the STW is overbore and not worth the extra powder, recoil and reduced barrel life all for a minimal improvement. With a 26 inch barrel and handloads I am getting about 3175 fps with a 160 grn Accubond from my 7mm Rem Mag.
I gotta say with little experience with the 7mm STW (my first)...I love it. I also own a 7mm rem mag and I don't notice any recoil difference (the rem has a 24" barrel and the STW has a 26"). Reduced barrel life? Give me a break. The difference between the barrel life of these two cartridges is minimal IMHO. My two cents
I have two 7mmstws.Both have 26" barrels and drive a 140gr bullet at 3500fps.As for accuracy see the targets below,as they are typical 100 groups for my rifles.
I'm still kicking my butt for tearing apart a very accurrate and fast 7mm Rem Mag that I had. It would do an honest 3350 with a 140 Ballistic Tip out of the 24" tube. I had it touch 3400 but it was a bit hot...so I backed it down a bit. I can't see an STW being that much flatter, at least at the ranges most of us shoot...or should shoot
I had a 'quick and dirty' STW made, hogged out a Browning A-Bolt 24" tube, and had an integral brake milled, so barrel length 22 1/4(?). using Barnes 160 xlcs at 3250 fps will get me 3/4" groups. (even fluked 'one ragged hole').
If I was to settle on anything less for performance, then I'd go with a 280 w/ handloads instead of carrying a 7mag.
I agree with Rembo on maybe regretting tearing it apart as it is very accurate rifle already, easily will shoot around .75 at 100yrds. And I wont shoot at anything out past 400-450yrds, so the Rem Mag should do it.
If you want to do that STW correctly, then you will have to enlarge mag box/length.
Once you have gone that far, you might as well buy/build a 7 RUM. Let's be honest with each other, the STW was still born- Big Green never supported it. The RUM might have a chance.
At the end of the day, you are going to be burning scoop fulls of powder for minimal gain.
I think you wrong sakabush. I know many guys that own STW's and I have only heard of a guy that owns a 7mmRUM. There is a reason Wholesale sports still has Senderos chambered in 7mm RUM that they brought in 2 years ago. I read an article which predicts the next 10 rounds to be extinct and the 7mm RUM was one of them.
