7mm Rem Mag vs 7mm WSM in a long action??

Don't trade the dies... 7mm WSM is the best if the WSM bunch... just accept the cartridge for what it is... a short action cartridge. Load medium weight bullets to maximum COL for your mag and let em rip. I use the 154 Hornady pills with RL-19 from a 22" Ruger KM77R MKII... it is a dandy hunting set-up for whatever you've a mind to point it at... big or small, near or far.

Yeah, that's one option. I'm not sure a 7mm wsm is a big enough step up from my 270 to be worth the bother though, If it isn't well suited for the heavier pills. If a short action was a necessity it would be great but I'm not so sure I care about action size too much...

Thanks Tod. What about a longer heavier bullet like a 175-180 berger or similar?

Thanks for that. Care to run the numbers at saami spec length?

The berger is only a tiny bit longer than the 162 eld-x? Interesting... I guess the velocity differences between the two loads would be similar then...

Is it for hunting or target shooting?

I am a hunter first and foremost. That said, I fire far more rounds at the range then afield. The primary purpose would be hunting, but I like having options to do other things with a gun too.

Edit - if I wanted something strictly for target work I would probably go with something like a 260 rem for lighter recoil. Maybe even a 6mm something-something.

If it is for hunting 7mm rem mag . Also keep in mind it is well noted the 7mm wsm has horrendous barrel life .

If they both use basically the same amount of powder to produce basically the same velocity, shouldn't barrel life be pretty much equal?

Also what makes the Rem Mag better for hunting?

barrel life should be identical. Same case capacity, same chamber pressure.

7mm Rem Mag would be better for hunting because you can get Remington 175gr Core-Lokt ammo!!!

In theory you would think they would be virtually the same but in practice they are not.
I know guys who have had both. The wsm has much less barrel life .One friend's wsm was completely done with less than 900 rounds. Also, if you do research it is well known about the very poor barrel life of the 7mm wsm. It is very well known in Europe and U.S. I can understand how some might not be aware of this.
For target the wsm is more inherently accurate.
Personally I shoot the 7mm saum because it has much better barrel life than the wsm for 2 reasons. It has less case capacity and a longer neck. I pulled one barrel at 1600 rounds but it was still shooting about 1/2 inch at 100 yards but for that gun those were poor groups.
A 7mm rem mag will give you approx 1500 rounds of accurate barrel life( maybe more) if you shoot 3 shot groups and don't overheat it.Personally I rebarreled my 7mm rem mag at about 2500 rounds( but it was done for awhile).
