Has anybody used Hornady sst 7 mm rem mag 160gr on moose? I love the accuracy of that round and I am sure that at 300m + it would work just fine but what about a 50m shot?

I've never used them on game, everytime I tried them I had accuracy issues.

The SST is a pretty frangible bullet, I would use something else, a regular Hornady spirepoint would work just fine.

The sst are and improved cup and core bullet and as such will perform just fine on a boiler room shot, but you may have issues with them not penetrating adequately on a shoulder shot at short range. The issue is the high impact velocity may cause the bullet core to seperate from the jacket.

I would recommend switching to a bonded bullet such as the interbond or the nosler accubond. Nosler partitions may have the longest running good reputation but are "older technology". All of these options will be more expensive tho.

Some may brand the Nosler Partition as "Old Technology"
but it has stood the test of time, and as such, is the bullet
I use when making comparisons to any of the "New Technology"
We are fortunate in this day....we have so many very good choices
when it comes to hunting bullets.
That is why I would steer clear of any "Iffy" bullet.
The SST is a bit soft, and I would not load it for a moose hunt.

You could load it down to help keep it together but even in my 7-08 I found them extremely frangible even at moderate speeds and moderate range.

I have switched to Swift Scirocco II's for 7-08 and 7WSM, controlled expansion and very accurate. They work at a broad range of speeds.Others have suggested the GMX , or interbond, The interbond supposedly has similar profile so you should be able to duplicate your performance.

hornady interbond. same as a sst but alot thicker jacket. i shoot sst for bear and deer. interbond for moose. they are just as accurate as the sst's.

Federal 160gr Trophy Bonded Tip

This is the 7mm Rem Mag factory moose load that I've seen up to now: Federal Premium 7mm Rem Mag 160gr Trophy Bonded Tip.
Expensive but the bullet is very accurate and terminal performance is best in class.

Sadly, Trophy Bonded Tip bullets are unavailable to reloader :(

Accubonds get my vote 160's, 140's word work too. Next would be the TTSX's in same weights.

Most of the guys in my moose camp group shoot 300WM or 300WSM and we all use 180gr Accubonds - some factory ampp, some of us reload. Couple guys with 270WSM's and they use 140gr Accubonds - GREAT BULLET.

Another vote for a tougher bullet. I have been using SST's for deer and have got superb accuracy in a couple of rifles, but find they are a fast opening, lightly constructed bullet. This is fine for thin-skinned game like deer and results in great performance with short runs or DRT kills, but I wouldn't trust one to not come apart on a shoulder hit on a moose.

My 7Mag solution for moose is to load up the 140gr TTSX for any brush busting shots, and if I'm expecting a long shot, I keep a few loads in my pocket that have a bullet that's a little more sleek. I use the 162gr A-Max for this purpose (keep it behind the shoulder, in the ribs), but the 160gr AB, 154gr IB, etc, would be good options, as well. If you don't plan on shooting beyond 400-450 yards, then the 140gr TTSX would get the nod for any and all moose shooting.

The 7mm 160 bullet in any design has good sectional density so should be fine. Contrary to popular belief I haven't seen screaming muzzle velocities with the 7RM with 160 grain (at least when I handloaded a 7RM I found 2850 fps to be the sweet spot for accuracy with 160 and anthing beyond that gave bad accuracy). But do shoot for lung and not shoulder at 50 to be sure.
