I have a Ruger M77 SS in 7mag and want to take down some swamp donkeys this fast approaching season, I know a well placed shot is king but whats the heaviest factory load available? Any recommendations on the following: Nosler Partition-Trophy Bonded Bear Claw-FailSafe. I would love to get into reloading but find it is too expensive for the time being. Thanks in advance for the responses, this site is taking up all my free time...

I used to use factory Remington Corelokt 175g when I had a 7mm and found them to be good for moose. Never shot one more than once. Lung shots. And I shot lots in WMU 530..... Sound familiar?

Partitions are great bullets, Trophy Bonded bear claw are great too.

The heaviest bullets *generally* available in 7RM are 175gr, but they actuually go up to 190gr or more.

Regardless, for your application, a 160gr or 175gr bullet of any of those you mentioned would work fine.

For that matter, a 140gr or 150gr Premium bullet would probably do it, just fine. Make sure you use the heavier bullets if youare shooting non premiums. :D

I have shot moose with winchester ballistic silvertips-150gr, Federal premium 165gr sierra boattails, winchester 150gr power point+, and Federal nosler partition 160gr and they all worked fine.Hit them in the right spot & they don't move. All were one shot kills so take your pick.Good luck this fall :D

The heaviest factory load that I've seen around that's "commonly" available, i.e., can buy it at Canadian Tire/Wal-Mart, etc... is the 175gr load. Wichester and Remington both make a 175 gr factory load. Not sure about Federal. Either will work fine for Moose. For handloads, I like the Barnes 160 gr X-Bullet as well as the Nosler Partition. Can't ever go wrong with Partitions!

For my fathernlaw's 7mm, we will be shooting Winchester Supreme Ammo -160gr. Accubonds.. After seeing the performance of this bullet out of the 270WSM and 300WM, I'm sold. I will also suggest the Failsafe & Partition Golds. For the Federal ammo go with either in the Accubonds or the Barnes TSX 160gr. I will be shooting the inlaw's rifle friday at the range since I put a new scope on it for him b/c he could hit the broad side of a barn the last 2 seasons b/c his other scope was screwed (TASCO GARBAGE). I will also be reloading it for him later on in both the Accubonds and TSX, and see which performs the best.

I personally do not like the TBBC as they dropped so bad from my hunting buddy's Sako m75 SS 300WM, compared to the PArtition golds and Failsafes, and now the Accubonds.. b/c we shoot identical guns. After he switched to the PG, his rifle was as deadly grouping at the range as mine. And now he is shooting the Accubonds. :D

Good luck in your quest for the moose.

I find that Federal Premium 165g's seem to shoot best out of my rem 700BDL.Lots of retained energy down range. Not that expensive either,$32 a box. Just another option for you to try. Good luck this fall.

I use handloads and have shot moose with 160gr Partitions. I now use 175 partitions. My friend has had really good luck with the Federal Premium ammo with 175gr Trophy bonded bear claws, but I think they are around $55 a box.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses, the Federal Accubonds and Nosler 160g appear promising after reviewing the data, I've never utilized anything other than a .30 cal 180g for Moose and wonder if the .284 160g isn't on the light side for a moose?

The .284"- 160gr accubond is more than adequate for moose.I have killed several moose and elk with .284"- 140gr partitions with very good results.Bullet construction means far more than bullet weight.

Moose die fairly easily. 7 Rem Mag with 160 gr Partitions have killed more than 20 for me. Longest shot (can be verified by 4 witnesses) 1120 yards. I do not suggest everyone should shoot moose at these ranges, but if you spend enough time shooting 1000 yard, its not that hard to do.
As other have mentioned shot placement is probably more important than bullet make, but it is hard to get better bullets than Partitions.
By the way, 100 years ago, before the BIG magnums were born, a powerful rifle that killed every species of North American game was called the 30-30.
I don't think there is ANY game in North America that can not be killed with a 7 Rem Mag, the only 1s I have not got personally yet are Polar bears and muskox.
Know your gun and know your limitations, shoot well and its all good.

7mm

There are lots of great bullets named here but i have been shooting 160gr.partitions for 30 years on everything with out a single animal dropping quick, again as mentioned earlier you have to hit them in the vitals. Partitions gold or standard get my vote.

When My dad worked in the artic [yukon] They used to have polar bear watch at night while they were building the highway. They used 303 british lee-enfields to shoot the bears if the bears come too close to the camps.A7mm Mag is alot harder hitting then a 303, so i can't see why not. The inuit use 22 's, 243's,250 savages,25-06's,etc.

I've dispatched many a moose with my 7mm RM, also a Ruger M77, I just got into reloading about 2 years ago now, but never had a problem taking down moose with 175grn factory ammo I usually bought federal. Now I'm trying out reloads using 175grn speer grandslams. First deer shot with this ammo and no bullet to recover (20yd head shot  )

Don't worry about the knock down power of the 7mm RM

Christened 7MM

My 7MM is officially my favourite rifle, no longer questioned, doubted and just generally scrutinized. I went with the Federal Premium 160gr Nosler's and called in a 2-3 year old bull last week to about 150 yds and nailed him in the lungs just above the heart. His Legs buckled and he went down hard blowing bubbles and the rest is history or should I say a #### load of hard work bordering on a gripper. The bullet was very effective, jellied the lungs and no second shot was needed. Good performance, good advice and great site. Now where's that jerky... :D
