Well I have a chance at buying at new condition Remington model 700 in 7mm Ultra mag. The gun has a timney trigger, and a 26" barrel with a beautiful wood stock. The ammo seems a lil harder to find for this caliber, but despite that, I have a hankering to buy this gun. Any opinions on the cartridge? Id like to use it for sheep and moose hunting. I dont mind shooting 3-400 yards at all.
Should I buy it or is the addiction talking?:redface:
 
If the rifle and shooter are accurate enough to take advantage of the impressive ballistics, and can live with the powder consumption and short barrel life, have at er!

I would not consider the cartridge unless you handload.
 
faster than the stw 7 and flat shooting. I make sure I don't heat up the barrel or shoot that often. has a large appetite for powder. I shoot a full case of hodgedon us869 with a fed 215 primer and 140 to 175 grain. projectiles . recoil isn't near what I thought, pretty mild. I would say go for it.
 
Ive read that barrel life with the 7mm rum should be around 600 rounds. I plan on only hunting with this gun, hopefully 600 rounds should be hard to reach. Im aware of the short barrel, just like my 6.5-.284 norma. Thanks for the input, any more is a joy to read.

I have a barrel life calculator I downloaded from 6mmBR.com. I can't check it now, but I remember calculating for a 7mmRUM and it spat out somewhere between 600-700 rounds. This would be when a benchrest guy would replace, a hunter may get quite a bit more. If you fire long strings or otherwise mistreat the barrel it could be quite a bit less.
 
Factory will be tough to find (but not impossible) and expensive.

I would buy a reloading kit before even considering the rifle. You could get set up to reload for less than the price of a scope.

I built a 7 STW (well, two originally, but one went away) the first time I read about it. Had a 7mm-300 Why before that. Both were still accurate at 1000 rounds, though not as tight as new. I'd say 1/2 to 3/4 moa out to around 700 rounds, as long as you're careful about heat. Double the size of those groups from 700 to 1200. When it went away it went quick, though. Rebarreled the 7mm-300 Wby, cut a new chamber in the first 7 STW. RUM would be a little harder on barrels i would say, but not a whole lot. FWIW. - dan

The want kicked in and I picked it up. Cant wait to shoot it. Hopefully I have the same attitude after firing a few shots, looks like its gonna be a kicker
 
"Kicker" is a relative term, expect the approximate equivalent of the various .300 mags with similar bullet weights. That puts it somewhere between an nice little gun and a near death experience depending on your point of view.;) . Not a big deal, really.
