What is your guys take on this calibre? Why has remington pretty much stopped producing it in there new guns? Also pros- cons. I am pretty much sold on trading for one but just wanted to hear if you guys had any stories?

There was a very good write-up about the cartridge in this months "HandLoader" magazine.

The conclusion was that it's performance is equal to that of the .280 AI, which is itself very. very close to the 7mm Rem Mag. The author also debunked the myth that the round does not handle heavy bullets well. All in all I think it is just being buried under the weight of all the other new cartridge introductions.
 
yes, it is basically a 280AI in a short action (not a bad place to be)

I owned a stainless m700 for a year and a half, and really enjoyed it. Silly me I sold it. :rolleyes:

Later today I will post up some more info on the cartridge.
 
I bought a stainless synthetic m700 in 7saum in July of 03. I slapped a cheap Bushnell scope on it, and loaded up 18 rounds of assorted handloads with odds and end bullets off my bench. 150 gr. Solid Base Noslers, 160 gr. Speer boattails, and 175 gr. Speer MagTips I believe.

I broke the barrel in on my rifle, cleaning after every shot for the first 5 shots, then I cleaned after the next 5 shots or so, twice. I had fired a 15 shot group that measured 1.8", right out of the box, with a bad trigger! I was impressed.

I dropped the barreled action into a LSS mtn rifle stock I had, and mounted a Burris FullField II 3-9x40mm scope with the Ballistic Plex reticle.

I did alot of load testing, ranging from 100 gr. Hornady HollowPoints over Varget, to 175 gr. Nosler Partitions over Retumbo. It was damn near impossible to find a load it didnt like. Often groups were .75" or less for 3 shots at 100 yards. Not bad at all for a factory rifle IMO.

I really like the cartridge, it has a nice long neck, good case capacity (but not overbore), has recoil that is fairly easy to handle, makes decent velocity, and is not too fussy to load for (in my experience). Remington just got beat to the punch by the WSM's. I do like the 270 WSM, and think it will do anything the 7saum will, and maybe a bit more.

here's alot of my load data, if anyone is interested :

7saum m700 24"

100 gr. - Hornady HP, 58.0 grs. RL15, WLR ~ 3485 fps

120 gr. - Hornady Vmax, 55.0 grs. RL15, F215M ~ 3225 fps, 0.42" 3 shot 100 yards
- Hornady HP, 57.0 grs. RL15, F215M ~ 3333 fps, 0.90" 3 shot 100 yards

139 gr. - Hornady Interlock, 64.5 grs. H4831sc, F215M ~ 3052 fps, 0.90" 3 shot 100 yards

150 gr. - CT Ballistic SilverTip, 62.5 grs. H4831sc, F215M ~ 2910 fps

154 gr. - Hornady Interlock, 62.0 grs. RL22, CCI 250 ~ 3018 fps, 0.90" 3 shot 100 yards

160 gr. - Nosler Accubond, 59.5 grs. H4831sc, WLR ~ 2791 fps, 0.41" 3 shot 100 yards *3 groups*

162 gr. - Hornady SST, 62.0 grs. IMR 7828, CCI 250 ~ 2893 fps, 0.51" 3 shot 100 yard

175 gr. - Hornady Interlock, 60.0 grs. IMR 7828, CCI 250 ~ 2802 fps, 1.31" 3 shot 100 yards

Hard to better those Remingtons, I had a Rem action and put a Hart Barrel in 7mmwsm its some tacker, try the 140gr Nosler BT with a hefty charge of H4831 3 in .125 at 100, at 3200+ use magnum primer.
 
Tod, very nice ballistics and a great looking rig. You are right, for a short action rd, it is pretty much ideal. But that did not transmit to sales. Plus Americans are going to lean towards bigger, better.

The RSAUM is equal to the 280AI, an enormously successful wildcat. But we are in magnum world and the target is the 7RM. 100fps less and it will not kill a thing.

So for those who understood the 280AI, it probably generated sales but the bulk of the market is 7RM/300WM territory and the RSAUM is just too small. Too bad.

Stock up on brass. You just never know. Now if the US army adopts it in a 30cal as the next LR sniper cartridge?????

Think I have been in BC's best export crop? Remember that the RSAUM fits quite nicely in a 308 length action. The WSM doesn't. Some AR10's have already been converted and they work great. Sure an upgrade from the M14's.

I think just the name is a real turn off myself 7mm suam (way to much lettering), nothing wrong with the cartridge but they did a horrrible job in marketing.
I think the best thing to happen to the WSM°s was that they were chambered in Tikka T3 rifles.

The only thing about the 7mm SAUM...

Don't get me wrong... I think it's a great ctg that's been eclipsed by the 7mm WSM. Watch for Remington to start offering their rifles in 7mm WSM & that will seal the fate of the 7mm SAUM. ;)

Personally, I think they will produce ammo for it for awhile. Depending on how many rifles they sold in it. Probably more likely in the US than in Canada, though.

But eventually, once the 7mm SAUM goes into "obsolete" status they will stop producing it. If you reload buy 500 brass casings & that should pretty near last you the life of the barrel. Then you can have your action rebarreled to 7mm WSM. ;) :D

you can always make cases from WSM brass...but I wouldn't worry about the obsolete thing.....brass will be around for a long time....
