Is there anyone who has tried to see how fast you can pust a 162gr bullet from this caliber without reaching unsafe pressures. If so could you please let me know your results.please include barrel length. Thanks

Ive never loaded the STW but from what I have read, it can do 3200-3300 f/s with a 160 in a 26" tube. I would think RL25, H1000, 7828, Retumbo, and similar would be the best fuel

My hunting load does 3300 out of 24" with 7828. Just for the record I had 2 other ones and stopped at 3300. They had 26" barrels. I'm useing the same charge so maybe this barrel is a little quicker? Either way thats plenty fast, you deffinately need premium bullets at this speed.

I have owned 6-7mm STW's over the past 12 years or so. Two had 24" barrels, and 3 had 26" tubes. One custom Pac-Nor barrel was 27" long. In the shorter barrels, I was unable to get 3300 with the 160/162 grain bullets, but all the longer barrels would get 3300 or a bit more. My favorite powder for velocity was H5010, where around 86-90 grains, depending on the individual chamber, was the ticket. Also working well were: Reloder 25, Vihtavuori N170, Retumbo, and AA8700. The STW seems to be a "happy" chambering, accuracy wise. I never had one that was not superbly accurate, and they are a laser beam with a 160/162 grain bullet, making hits at 500 quite do-able.
The 160 arrives at 500 with a ton+ of residual energy as well. [just for those who feel x amount of energy is important!!] Regards, Eagleye.

Would the 162gr Hornady hold up at those speeds? I certainly agree with the accuracy of this round. Never seen such a easy round to load for.

the 162 h would be fine at long range but i loaded bonded in case a close in shot was avalable. i don't think i would trust it under 200 yds or on a shoulder shot.

I never used anything to hunt with in my STW's but the 160 Partition, and I had no issues at short or long range. I believe that I recovered only 3 bullets out of a dozen head of game shot. [Mostly Moose & Elk] The rest were passthroughs. Regards, Eagleye.

News flash boys, plain old 7828 generates lots of speed. You don't realy need the ultra slow powders. Was shooting off last years hunting ammo last time out. Got one group at .34" have tons of sub 1/2" groups at 100 and sub 2" at 300 with this load but it won't average that.

I have owned three 7mmstw rifles, and I was able to reach 3300fps with 160gr bullets in two of them. However,my favorite load is the 140gr mrx, followed by the 140gr ttsx. Both can safely be driven at 3500fps out of 26" barrels.
I wouldn't feel overly comfortable firing a 160gr bullet at 3300fps out of a 24" barrel.

US 869 works well in this caliber. Funny has same data as the older ball H-870, at twice the price--what a coincidence.

Yeah funny coincidence (Oh look Bobby-Joe we found more warehouses full of old surplus ball power :D).

I still have a bit of H-870 Ill try and do a side by comparison over the chrony for the heck of it. I bet velocity is pretty close.

I thought US869 was little bit slower ?

Bla, bla, bla. I wouldn't feel overly comfortable fireing 140s out of my STW. Thats what a 270 is for.

Bla,bla, bla.A half dozen elk,a moose,a bighorn, three pronghorn,a mountain goat, and over two dozen deer weren't comfortable after being hit with 140gr bullets out of my 7mmstw rifles.
Not one of them made it fifty yards after being hit,and most dropped on the spot,or within a few yards.
Then again,I wouldn't own any 270 myself.:D
