How would one go about acquiring a new 7mm STW? Can any gun eg a SAKO 7mm rem mag be redone? Could one start with a Remington 700 sps 7mm rem mag and have one built by Guillard (Ive heard he is amazing and I live near him). I would prfer one with a different stock than a 700 with a smaller handgrip like a tikka, sako etc

Buy a new SPS in 7mmremmag,and have it rebarreled to 7mmstw with a quality 26" barrel, and have the barreled action restocked with the stock of your choice.

Thanks again stubble. Would it be the barrel that is different eg would one of T Gaillard's .284 barrels work if it had the right twist? What would a stock that isnt so large a hndgrip be ie an example

I personally would not have a 7mmstw with less than a 26" barrel. The 7mmremmag,and 7mmstw use the same size bolt face, and a 7mmremmag can be rechambered to 7mmstw,but it may not form a perfect chamber if the rifle being rechambered has a sloppy chamber to begin with.

If you really want it to perform velocity wise use a 28 inch barrel. With a 26 inch I would stay with a Rem Mag or Wby Mag.

I would also like one with a detachable mag.

When I built my own 7mmstw with a detachable mag,I used a 700 action, the factory 700 detachable mag system, and a mcmillan stock. It feeds very well, and allows a maximum cartridge length of 3.675".

Would a 7mm rem mag Sako AV be convertible?

The Sako magnum AV action should handle the 7mmstw,but you might want to measure your magazine length to determine the longest overall length that you can use.

The Sako TRG-S was available in 7 STW, with a detachable mag. Maybe you can find one of those. Failing that, you can rechamber any 7 Rem Mag. You will have to make sure the mag will feed full length magnums (the 7 Rem Mag is really an intermediate belted cartridge, based on the full length 375 H&H case, shotened and slightly improved. The 7 STW is basically the full length 375 H&H case, necked down to 7mm and improved). Some of the DM rifles can be made to work by substituting a 375 length mag for the 7mm Rem Mag length mag (a Browning Abolt for example). - dan
