7mm stw

I know nothign about building rifles but know I have a itch for a 7mm stw for my long range moose hunting . What would be a good base to build one and where would I guy buy / get the barrel reamed etc. Like I said I know nothing on this subject. I know my buddy has a sako 75 chambered facty in 7mm stw os there any other manufacture that produce them

If you want one on the Cheap you can buy a Remington 700 SPS in 7mm mag and send it to a Gunsmith who owns the correct reamer .

David Henry did mine a couple years back.

Im not sure there any current Factory guns in 7mm STW, you will see a few of them pop up for sale. Maybe put a WTB ad in the EE.
 
Guys and gals, thank you for all your great advise and expertise. Through your writing in this forum I have made my decision and purchased the sako 7mm STW. Look forward to killing my first moose with it and when it happens I have all of you to thank. Should I use 140,150 or 160 grain for approx. 250 yards. I'm not familiar with this gun at all and again any extra info would be appreciated.

Nice, I like the 160 gr. accubond...Use whatever premium bullet your gun will shoot well .

David Henry is a member here, so you can send him a PM . I believe he's in Bentley Alberta but his shop was for sale so Im not sure anymore. Went by D Henry Gunmakers.

I have taken around 40 head of big game with the 7mmstw,all using 140gr bullets.The 140ge TTSX does a great job on game from pronghorn to moose.
 
I had a couple factory barreled STW's last year, a 26" stainless fluted Sendero and a 24" stainless BDL , had 7mm Rem Mags in the same configurations. The 24" STW was at most 50fps faster than the 7 Mag with some loads, some max loads were the same depending on the powder, the 26" was about 75 fps faster.You can't get a bullet near the lands in the STW and fit the mag box. I traded/sold both STW's and kept the plain vanilla 7mm Rem Mags, one of mine, a 24" factory BDL-SS does over 3300 with a 140 TSX with 69grs of Rel22, that doesn't lose much trajectory compared to the STW, at least as far as I'll ever shoot.
I had a 24" 7 Mag about 10 years ago that pushed a 139 Hornady to 3400 with IMR4350, wookie316 has a 24-1/4" Gaillard barreled Sako AV that will also hit this speed. This barrel also did close to 3200 with a 160. The STW doesn't gain as much over a properly loaded 7mm Rem Mag as some think.

But if a guy wants an STW I'd never try and talk you out of it.
A friend of mine has a stainless Sako 75 in the STW, he's had it for years, uses it a lot...even carries it for sheep.
 
My current one goes 150-200 fps faster than before the rechambering job. I shot it quite a bit as a 7 mag to get a good baseline then rechambered. This is useing case life/primer pocket tightness as the pressure indicator.

Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering what kind of loads give you those velocities in the 7Mag? I'm currently using IMR4831, but velocities are not what I would expect, so I may try IMR7828SSC...
 
To make your STW shine, velocity-wise with 160's, try Retumbo, or Ramshot Magnum. H5010 was great as well, but is no longer available. With the 175's, I was able to reach 3200 safely using H5010 in a 27" barrel. Eagleye.
 
RL22 or RL25 is killer in a 7mm Rem Mag with a 140gr. 67-68gr RL22 has been good in at least a half dozen 7mm I have shot. Speed vary from 3050 FPS in a 22 7/8" factory barrel, up to 3385 FPS in the barrel Rembo mentioned above ;)

73gr RL25 pushed a 140 quite accurately in the 3300 FPS range in this rifle.
