7mm STW?

Had a 7mmX300 Wby (twin sister so to speak) on a #1 for years with a 28" barrel. Great cartridge took several caribou, sheep and a moose with it using 160 gn Parts and 150 gn B.T.s. That was long before we had all the amazing powder selection for these cases. Nowadays we have the 7 RUM that does anything as well or better and cases are everywhere. Back then the 7X300 Wby was a significant step up from the 7RM especially with the 28" tube and all in a package the same length as a 22" barrelled bolt action.

Picked up a fourth one in a swap, a Gaillard built Sako 75 stainless. Seems to kill moose and bears rather abruptly.

Normally 4 rifles of fhe same caliber seems a little overkill but I'm happy to make and exception for the STW.

I have owned six 7mmstw rifles, but at present, I am down to two. I have actually sold off most of my other big game rifles, but as long as I hunt, I will own at least one 7mmstw.

I've had five, one of those I owned twice.(Sellers remorse) I'll probably get buried with one. For what I do locally I can't find a better combination. Flat like .257, hits like a .300. Light recoiling. Part of me knows that a .300 might be a little more versatile on a world-wide mission, but the rest of me knows that the STW has always been enough.

Someday I'll sell down to a few rifles too. Spend the money on hunting instead.

to bring this thread back on track .

to the op , have you given any thought to a ruger #1 action to build your rifle ?

it would allow you to run a 30 or even a 32 inch barrel while still having the same overall length as a bolt action with a 26 inch barrel .

Very...elegant solution...to a unanswered or asked assumption. Channeling my inner Sunray there.
