7mm vrs 270 wsm

not sure if this has been done,
didn't see anything in the search bit. i have narrowed it down to either a 270 wsm or a 7mm . these seem to me to be flat shooting hard hitting elk/moose rounds . be honest i don't know alot about either. likely be getting an xbolt ,have handled one and was impressed but also like the idea of TC encore -? single shot ( not the black powder one ) like the idea of longer barrel but over all same length rifle.would 4" barrel length make that much diff. between either of the cal.? are xbolts,TC's accurate ? ( for 400-500 yrd shots or more ) a bunch of questions in there.if you have any exp with either rifle or cal. shoot the puck
 
ah caliber comparisons! here is the standard answer, the 7mm offers 15 grains more bullet weight, 7/1000 of an inch more diameter but doesn't have the charisma that a 270 does. both are capable enough for thin skinned game that does not want to eat you. 7mm rem mag and 270 win standard are easy to find and inexpensive when you do. thats it in a nutshell
 
the 270 win is cheaper than the 7mm rem mag but not by a whole lot. both are easy to find the 270 kicks less but not by a whole lot. they are both in the same class as the 30-06 for recoil with normal bullet weights. the 7 mag shoots flatter, and people like saying "magnum" when they talk about their rifles. so do i.
 
I had a 7 mag for years, and I hunt with 3 others with a 7mag and one guy with a 270wsm. I say with the same bullet construction they are pretty much the same. I can`t think of anything one can do that the other can`t.
 
There may be greater availability of ammo with the 7mm rem mag.

I have an x-bolt composite stalker in 7mmWSM. So, very close to what you're talking about. My x-bolt is very accurate. I've tried 8 different loads through it and the worst group I got was 1.25 inches, and the best was 0.43 inches. Most groups are well under an inch.
As for .270wsm vs 7mag, they'll be very close, but since you're intending the rig for Elk and Moose, I'd go with the 7mag. Slightly bigger bullets, and higher weights. If you don't handload, then no question get the 7mag. I found the happy medium between the two you're considering with the 7wsm, but it seems like it will be the first wsm to be phased out. Doesn't bother me, though, since I handload.
 
Sounds a lot like a 7RM vs. .300WM debate to me. Both the .270WSM and 7RM are so close that you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference on game, but you WILL see a difference when it comes to bullet and ammo availability and price.
 
I've done the same comparison, and when comparing 7 mm Remington to 270 WSM using Lymans 49th there virtually is no difference when shooting bullets of equal weight.
My personal experience with a Ruger 7 mm is that bullets are readily available and can be found in 175 gr. where as the 270 WSM maxes out at 160 gr.
As other posters have suggested I've broadened my search to the 300 Win Mag and 300 WSM where there is a real difference when comparing to 7 mm and 270 WSM the range of bullets are greater with more power.

If all you can handle is 270 or 7Rem Mag, I would go for 7 Rem Mag.

For elk/moose, I suggest to look for 300 or heavier.
 
7mm RM is the way to go, imho. Unless there is a particular rifle you like and it is only available in the .270 WSM. I know the trend is lighter/faster with Barnes' TSX, and I did dabble in that a bit, but I have always had good luck with the heavier bullets at slightly lower velocity. That is why I am going back to 175gr bullets in my 7mm RM.
 
FInd the gun you like, chambered in whatever, and buy it. 7RM ammo is easy to find, 270WSM is pretty available but 7WSM ammo might be a bit scarce.

No issues if you are a handloader.
 
Quit fooling around. At 500 Yards hunting moose and elk, take the man's step to a 375 H and H, you can eat right up to the bullet hole. Or atleast a 300 Win Mag
 
If you're looking for advice on caliberrs I think you could tone down the 4-500 yard shots to under 300. Buy a rifle, practice with it then figure out how far you can shoot. Either will work but if it's for strictly Moose and Elk get a 30 Mag. or 338.

Sorry but I have to laugh when people say if its for moose buy 300 win mag. I see no point to recomend the 300 over the 7mm rem mag!! My old man has a 7mm rem mag and i had a 300 win mag(brother owns it now) we shoot moose every year with both cartridges and to be honest I havent seen any difference in performance from either on moose at any reasonable range! both are good cartridges for moose! and im sure the 270wsm will work just as well with good shot placement and the proper bullet!
