7mm vs 270wsm

if you could still get the 195 grainers for the 7mm, there would be no comparison for me,but then lve seen lots of moose die in one shot with a plain old 270 win with 130 noslers at long ranges,just get what you like and shoot it as many have said already.

Sorry but I have to laugh when people say if its for moose buy 300 win mag. I see no point to recomend the 300 over the 7mm rem mag!! My old man has a 7mm rem mag and i had a 300 win mag(brother owns it now) we shoot moose every year with both cartridges and to be honest I havent seen any difference in performance from either on moose at any reasonable range! both are good cartridges for moose! and im sure the 270wsm will work just as well with good shot placement and the proper bullet!

recoil is not an issue I have a 45/70 gg and love shooting it,what I want is a flat shooting cart. the rainbow trajectory is good to 250yrds max for me. 300 winmag dosn't bug me when I shoot it but I want fast and flat. I think I have decieded on the 7mm . bullet weight and availabilty being the swing vote. now I need to pick a rifle. going to shoot an xbolt sun. morning .I have read nothing negative about them yet so it looks very promising.like the Sako - is it worth another $800.00 or is it just brand name appeal ?

Never said you had to go to a 300 for MOOSE, hell, I shot one this year with a 7SAUM, the FACT is if you want to keep energies out to the 400-500 yards range capable of dropping an ELK, is that a 180 grain would do better than anything you could shoot out of that 7mm. But for that matter, you could drop a MOOSE with a 30-06, 270, 303 British, when you really get down to it, you need shot placement more than anything. Buy your caliber, shoot it, and learn to shoot it well.

yikes! here we go again. as i said the 270 win "non magnum" is a very capable cartridge for the game you are after. the seven mag is every bit as capable plus a little bit extra range. the 270 wsm is just an expensive cartridge that offers nothing over the seven rem mag. the short mags are a bunch of hype and bull costing twice as much and delivering less than the tried and proven 2.5" magnums. trust me a 1/2 inch of bolt throw is not going to make a difference in the field. the first shot will be the most accurate with any consecutive shots being less so. besides, it should only take one. when a new hunter who is not into firearms asks me what caliber to choose it is always the same, 270 win, 7mm rem mag or 30-06. moose aren't any more bullet proof than they were one hundred years ago. new hunters who aren't gun savy should not be shooting beyond three hundred yards anyway. usually the gun is more capable than the hunter, and buying the latest technology does not make you a great shot. practice! good luck.

I had a 7 mag for years, and I hunt with 3 others with a 7mag and one guy with a 270wsm. I say with the same bullet construction they are pretty much the same. I can`t think of anything one can do that the other can`t.

Yes there is one thing the 7mm mag can do that the 270wsm can't. Is the 7mm is far cheaper and far more available in factory ammo.

There are lots of really nice used rifles out there in 7mm RM. for the same or less than a new Sako. Some examples are the Sauer 90 and 202, Steyr-Mannlicher, and for even less FN Mausers, older Sako models (especially the Fiberclass) and the like.

My 2 cents. I regulary shoot 7mm and have shot a few 270wsm (Didn't like them) I think the Short mags are hype and not worth extra cost of ammo. As far as rifle choice I have limited experience with the Xbolt but the way it performed was truely impressive right out of the box and most likely will be the next rifle I buy.

It will be interesting to see how you like the X-bolt from your range test I handled the Browning X-bolt and the Sako A7 in stores and was pleased with both but have yet to test them an the range.
