7mm vs 280

At the present time I am gathering compnents for a custom 7mm. Rem 700 action. Hs precision stock. Shilen trigger. Guilaard barrel I'm thinking 7mm rem mag but am having a time deciding

The finest custom rifle I have ever owned was a 7mm Remington Magnum.

Nice looking rifle Chuck. If I didn't have ADD I'd just shoot a 7mm Rem Mag & be happy with it. I always seem to see something else that I just got to have though. I'm worse than my wife & her shoe collection.

My name is Wookie & I have a problem.

I don't know why you would want a small cartridge like the 140 gr 7mm when you could go to 8mm and get equal or better velocity and or energy with a 180 or 200 grain bullet. The difference in kick is hardly enough to wimp about and why not make a bigger hole, after all you are trying to kill something right ? 7mm is only marginally better than 30 06 or my old 303 British, I mean if you're handloading and gonna go magnum go big or go home.

The recoil from a 7mm -140gr bullet launched out of an 8lb gun at 3100fps is about 19ftlbs.The recoil of an 8mm -200gr bullet launched out of an 8lb gun at 3100fps is about 35ftlbs.The difference is about 16ftlbs.The recoil from the 8mm is close to double that of the 7mm.

Tell me about it!When my 8mmMag speaks I pay attention! Mur

yup, my 8mm Mag certainly is in a different class of recoil than a 300 Mag, let alone a 7mm (which is more like a 30-06)

My 8mm RM kicked a heck of alot harder than any 7mm RM I have ever owned. Any game the size of elk and smaller will know no difference. Don't try comparing the .303 to a 280 or 7mm RM, that is just silly. That's like trying to compare hardball to softball, two different games entirely.
(now I am going to get checked cause I agreed with SJ:bangHead:)

7mm does not designate any specific cartridge. The 280 was for a time sold as the 7mm express.:D

If you are referring to the 7mmremmag,why would anyone buy a 7mmremmag when they could have a 7mmstw?

Why would anyone buy a 7mmstw when they could have a 7mmRUM?

Why would you buy a 7mmRUM when you could buy a 7.21 Firebird ?

HA ha Mush
