7mm vs .308

I've killed ground hogs to moose with the .308. I also wouldn't be afraid to hunt the 7mm-08 and the ammo availability is a moot point these days. It is widely available and popular.

The first things I pack is my gun and ammo. Everything else can be bought along the way...

7mm08 has barely any recoil which is nice when sighting in lol

I bought my boy a 7mm08 Browning Micro Midas for his 14th birthday topped with a Bushnell 3500 DOA and I was really surprised at how much I like it. I'm a diehard 7mm rem mag fan ( still using the old mans '75 Winchester M70 mostly) but I'll be using the 7/08 for deer this year, my Elk tags will be filled with the 7mm mag.

My place of residence has no bearing on this thread. :)

I'll say it like this..............

a 140gr 7mm projectile going 2800-2850 ft/sec isn't going to have problems with much. ;)

A 7.62mm projectile of 150gr going 2750 ft/sec will have about the same troubles in life.

Yep. I got both. The only reason I would take one over the other would have everything to do with the rifle and optic rather than the chambering.

I’ve never really understood the argument about ammo availability. I split it up between a couple pieces of duffel/coat pockets so can quickly find a few rounds. How many rounds do you need on a hunting trip? If more than a box the second box probably won’t help much.

Aside from finding it easier, more common ammo is cheaper more often.

That matters for a lot of people.

I routinely snag 308 soft point hunting ammo for $10-15/box.

Hey looking for some input and opinions for 7mm and .308. Want a round I can efficiently use for deer but enough punch for elk or bear. Is the range similar with right ballistics or is one superior?

Worry more about the rifle you intend to use, rather than the round its chambered for. There are plenty of good cartridges that fall in the 6.5-.30 caliber range and there is a lot of performance overlap within that range. What's your budget? Do want a carbine or full length rifle? What should it weigh? What is your tolerance to recoil? What type of action do you prefer? Are scope mounts readily available for the rifle you're considering?

Have a 7mm-08 and love it. That said ammo selection, availability and price 308 hands down.

Reading the charts the 7mm-08 has slight edges in drop and B/C, I don't think they are enough to really make a noticeable impact in real life.

Its more than a slight edge, but you've got to get way out there (500yds give or take) for the differences to amount to much - which is farther than 98% of hunters should be shooting.

$10-15 a box these days? You must know some places that put the stuff on clearance regularly or something! Even Barnaul softpoints are more expensive than that in these parts!

Its pre-owned ammo, much of it is full box, some never been opened. Just have to know where to look to find it.

I find enough to fill all my needs with pre owned ammo with the exception of 20g sabot slugs.

My recent scores: Hornady Interlocks 150gr in 308 @ $10/box new in box 2 boxes

Winchester Silvertips 180gr 308 - 3 full boxes for $40 total

Sellier and Bellot 240gr 44mag hollow point $20/50 rounds

Get a 7 mm Rem and be done with it.
Take anything from Grouse to Grizzley, lol.
Head shots are important in some cases.

I dropped an 800+ lb moose at 250 yrs,and it didn't take a step.

I know a guy who forgot to put his bolt back in after a cleaning and went hunting.
My next family meeting:
Be it resolved that .303 British ammo is widely available in backwoods towns and the fact that I’m a man means I’m inattentive and forgetful and don’t always put back together that which is taken apart, a sum of $2000 shall be allocated from family budget to acquire a Ruger number one in .303 British.

Then you won't lose or forget the magazine, either.
