I have a 7mm RM that is going to need to have the barrel set back/replaced soon. The 7mm Wby looks like it does quite well with the heavier bullets. Several manuals show +3000fps with 175gr bullets. Are any of you actually getting that kind of performance? I could go to a 7mm Mashburn too; what kind of performance are you Mashburn owners seeing with the +160gr bullets?

Mashburn owners, do you simply size and fireform .300 Win Mag brass?

I have limited experience with the Mashburn, but may have more than most anyone here with only a couple hundred rounds down range. :)

3050 with 175's is doable, 3150 with 160's is doable and I just had some 150's at 3375, but I could put primers back in with my fingers. :) 2250 is better! :)

I'm kinda now starting to see what powder charges are acceptable.

Re: forming. I cannot see any difference between formed virgin cases and cases that have the extra step of being fire formed. Form, load, and hunt.
 
CN - What kind of OAL are you using? Do you FL size with custom dies (manufacturer?) or is running the brass through a 7mm NS sufficient?
 
3.575 for much of the loads I'm using. I use RCBS form and FL Mashburn dies, but you could get away with just running 300 Win Mag brass into the Mashburn FL die.
 
3.575"....that kind of puts an end to that idea. My magazine will not handle that kind of length. I was under the impression that the Mashburn was similar OAL to a .300 Win Mag. 3.35") I might be able to get away with 3.4" or so, but not +3.5".

Warren Page is alive and well and living in Alberta . . . who knew! I never really got why Remington shortened the 7 mag case to 2.5" as over bore capacity was the whole point. The Mashburn looks like a fun cartridge to experiment with. Is yours the 2.63" case length or the full length H&H version?

It is a Voere Titan II - as you may know it has the detachable magazine. I'd rather not try to find the components to convert it to the 3.6" magazine as those parts are pretty much unobtanium.
 
Dan - how does the Wby perform? It looks great on paper, but I suspect some of that has to do with the typical Weatherby freebore. IIRC it has about 7 grains extra capacity over the Remington version, but the data is all significantly higher pressure.
 
Well I just got my Titan II back from my brother, and I checked out the magazine - it can handle 3.60" cartridges. I guess I can consider both the STW and the Mashburn after all!
 
I have a Voere titan II in 7mm STW, it's my fave rifle! Mine is getting the douglass barrel removed and replaced with something heavier. It was a 30" barrel and will be a 30" again. The velocities you can get from a 30" are amazing! I have no issues at all with the magazine.
 
Perhaps you folks who have experience with the STW and the Mashburn could point out some of the pros/cons and reasons you prefer one over the other.

Cleftwynd - do you know what the shank diameter and thread is for the Titan II? My factory barrel has a .590" muzzle diameter and I like the balance.
 
This may make up your mind for you.

For the Mashburn:

Reamer: $200
Dies: $200 or with form dies $300

If that is OK with you then I really like where it falls in case capacity and the overall cartridge design.
