Well, he said he sighted in his new rifle but it kicked like a mule. He also said he used the Weatherby ammo.
He simply thought they were 7mm Rem Mag MADE by Weatherby and didn't know it was a different caliber. Totally a gun guy, well experienced and always safe so it can happen to the best.

Anyhow, I will post pics of the ammo later as I only have an overall one of the box from him now. About half of 12 rounds shot show primers just starting to crater but not flat.

I have never tried it so... who has closed the bolt on 7mm Weatherby ammo in a 7mm Rem Mag? I honestly didn't think it would fit easily.
I will likely remove the firing pin, go outside and test.

Is interesting. I had scoffed at an article how North Americans were too stupid to read a headstamp or a cartridge box label to differentiate between 8x57JS versus 8x57J, so SAAMI created a milder pressure load called 8mm Mauser. Your "buddy" pretty much proved SAAMI to be correct. You likely want to find a more knowledgeable "gun guy"...

7 mm Rem. in a Weatherby I could see, the other way around not so. I once took a shot at a coyote in my yard and managed to grab 7mm Rem. for my .338 by mistake. Never even scared him.

Look at SAAMI chamber drawings - maybe a thou tight at the shoulder?? is about all the difference, I think?? But never tried it myself - 7mm Weatherby into a 7mm Rem.

Most people who are that dumb wouldn't pay Weatherby prices for their ammo. Then again, the old boy I hunt with was looking at my Model 71 and said "Gotta love a nice 30-30" so you have to take "gun guy" with a grain of salt sometimes.

I bought a rifle at an auction years ago. Was sold as a 7mm RM. Had a custom barrel on it and the only marking on the barrel said 7mm. So I put ONE 7 mm RM through it. Case sure didn’t look right when it came out. Further investigation proved that it was actually a 7mm STW. I don’t know that it was unsafe, but it only took once to learn my lesson.

Bit of a side issue, and  I don't mean to hijack the thread, but you've made mention of :) my favorite lever gun/calibre combo. The model 71 Winchester in 348 WCF. I had a very nice one in a standard grade. Then, at a local gun show I saw a near MINT deluxe grade, but a little on the pricey side so I passed on it. Seeing it again at a later gun show and doubting I'd ever find one better, ;) I weakened and 'adopted' it :d:d .

There, I fixed it for your gun ;)
I had these BR shooters think my Marlin 444 Remington was a 30-30 one time.
Schitz happens and the op's buddy was able to walk away with a lesson learned .
Brain farts can kill.

I saw a 6.5x55 fired out of a .308 Norma magnum once. And a 25-06 AI in a Remington 700 7mm Rem mag that destroyed the rifle and injured the shooter.

I was corresponding with a Grandson who had inherited GrandPa's custom 7mm STW. Grandson had tried some first hand loads using some 8mm Rem Mag brass that Grandpa had re-formed - but had apparently not yet peeled those necks to fit the "custom" chamber - could not slip a bullet into a fired case's mouth. Did not help that Nosler's loading data on-line and in Nosler 9 book showed a "start" load, with H1000 and 175 grain bullets, that was several grains higher than their previously published "max" loads. After some head scratching, we discovered that Nosler data is now listing the same loads for 160 grain bullets as for 175 grain bullets with H1000 - so, I guess, a typo - wrong data got cut and pasted?

That particular "custom" barrel was stamped "7mm STW" - but no mention of the tighter than SAAMI throat, which a chamber casting revealed. Oddly, once he found and started using commercial "7mm STW" brass, the issue went away.

Wondering - a barrel stamped "7mm" - that is not any cartridge's name? Might have been to identify the barrel blank?

In this particular case, 7mm is referring to the bore, not the cartridge. A rather stupid way to stamp the barrel... cartridge designation is what is important.

I've seen 30-30 that was fired in a 303 Enfield.

I inspected a factory 700 Remington 7mm Rem Mag that had fired a factory .303 British... the bullet had exited the barrel, the owner could not open the bolt.

After removing the barrel and extracting the case the rifle was reassembled, headspace checked and it was good to go... that's how good a 700 action is... the back of the .303 case was fully formed into the same dimensions as a belted magnum case... only the head stamp said .303 British. The front of the case was short...

Well these Weatherby rounds chamber in this 7mm Rem Mag perfectly without any abnormal feeling whatsoever. The longer Weatherby neck didn't scratch at all.

Not much to see but here is a pic of the reformed Weatherby brass and original Weatherby ammo.

I had bought some "loaded" ammunition for a 7mm Weatherby Mag. I was not sure if what came was factory loads or someone's hand loads. Looking for clues on primers, I was sort of surprised to find a number of head stamps saying "270 Weatherby" - so I pulled all the bullets - and found three different weights, almost randomly scattered among the boxes of ammo. The round nose 175 grain were readily noticed before pulling, but for sure, Hornady 139 and Hornady 162 look very similar when seated!!! Two types of powder came out - visually different granule size and colour - so I decided I had bought some brass - not ammunition. Was almost all in the yellow Weatherby boxes as shown in Post #18 - It all might have made sense to whomever had done those - but that was not the seller guy.
