7mm Weatherby shot out of a 7mm Rem Mag

chuck nelson - just marks on the neck mouth from entering the throat - IF it was a touch longer than the rifles throat. Spec say 2.540 for both the 7mm Rem Mag chamber throat and the trim to length of the &mm Weatherby cartridge case. No marks means the ammo is as long or shorter than the chamber.

hawk-i - most likely. The primers are barely flattened IMO. I have flattened more primers out of target rifles an IPSC guns than most people have fired so I wasn't inclined to check.
Since the ammo fit so well and the 7mm Rem Mag has more chamber volume than the Weatherby [look at my pic], I suspect the pressure wasn't any higher in this rifle than if fired out of a 7mm Weatherby. The brass and rifle are good for 65000 psi. 61000 psi is the 7mm rem mag spec

What's the big deal???

All that happened was a 7mm Wby Mag was FIREFORMED to a 7mm Rem Mag. No big deal.

It happens all the time when folks fireform cases from original to the Ackley Improved versions.

I had a 30-06 that had been improved by the late Austin Moorcroft, by straightening out the case taper to ONE degree and pushing the new 40 degree shoulder ahead so that the neck was .250 in long.

It gave a substantial increase in velocity as well as recoil, when loaded to its full potential. Too much for me, so I sold it to a fellow that insisted recoil didn't bother him.

If the shooter was shooting factory cartridges, which are usually very close to minimum dimension spec, I'm willing to bet that cartridge chambered without any resistance at all.

They both headspace on the face of the belt as well, which are identical. SAFE TO DO. Smart, maybe not, considering the expense of the Wby cartridges.

I think you mean the Win in a Wby. We saved a hunt for a guy one time who showed up with a 300 Wby and no ammo. Sighted in his rifle with some 300 Win Mag, and he went hunting. :)

Ted

Yeah sorry that's what it was, I mean it wasn't ME shooting it so just second hand story.

I know someone who fired a bunch of 270win out of his 280. Didn't group with a crap! He had no idea. Thought the gun was a POS.
