7mm WSM for long range?

Thinking about my next build.

Have this has as a hunting caliber in another rifle but was toying with the idea of using it for long range.

I have a 7mm-08 set up for precision currently but was looking to maybe get something to get well past the 1 mile mark.

Or should I be looking larger say .30 or .338 area? Looking at ballistics it is a little better at pushing a larger bullet than the 7mm-08 but if a guy wants to reach out a bit further maybe step up to something in the 30 or 338 cal class?

Thoughts?????

Probably the 7mmwsm would be a realy good choice short fat round cheap ammo with lots of choice and avalability.Barrel life would be good .What action would you use?

Krieger barrel is good, Rem700 not so. If you opt for cheap action and intend to shoot to a mile then much better choice would be single shot (stiff) Savage action. Caliber to a mile? try first to investigate what kind of bullets you can purchase with BC of at least .650 or so (preferably two or three kinds) then choose the cartridge and barrel lenght that will push said bullet to at least 2900FPS.

7mm RM has a case capacity of 84 grains compared to the 7mm WSM at 81 grains. Probably insignificant difference in barrel life.

The ballistics of a 7mm bullet are excellent with BC's available almost up to 0.70. Good long range candidate.

What???? Are you saying a Rem 700 action isn't good??? Holy man, there is a bunch of bunk info in this forum lately....

First off, a 7mm WSM will be good on barrels......????
Second, a remington 700 action isn't good.....??? :bangHead: Do you have any idea what a large majority of competition rifles are built off of??? I use a savage action but I don't consider it to be any better than a Rem 700 action.

Is there a full moon outside? I'm sorry if most of my posts seem to be negative lately but really...... There seems to be a lot of crap being posted lately..... Maybe they need to release another Call of Duty video game so these guys can continue to hide in their basements.
 
I was wondering that myself. I figured that a 700 action that is trued is hard to beat. I am not a gunsmith, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!!

I don't know if I can buy that fact that a 7mm bullet at 2800-2900 ft/sec can start to burn a barrel out after 700 rounds. If that is the case I'll stick with my 7-08!!!

It's not the bullet that's burning the barrels buddy. It's the magnum cartridge and the amount of powder they are burning combined with the velocity.

One of the popular cartridges for F-Class in GBR is the 300WSM necked to 7mm.

Same case capacity but you get a longer neck with the 300 brass than with the current 7WSM cases.
 
Ok, so what about .243's and 25-06's. I have read and talked to individuals who say that 700 or 800 rounds in some cases the barrel is shot out. I understand a combination of things are factors but something doesn't sound right to me there.

Just curious, what does it being a "magnum" cartridge have for effect on barrel life?

Anyways, back to topic here.

Maybe I should step up to a larger caliber??

My apologies Kelly Timoffee, as mentioned before, magnums have quite a bit more powder. As someone else has said before roughly 81-84 grains of powder as compared to 40-46 grains in a .308 for example. With nearly double the amount of powder being burned and a high velocity the throat is usually burned out in way less time.
 
What about quality or "cleanliness" of these powders?? Efficiency of a particular powder vs bore diameter and barrel length ??

I'd be better off with a .338 cal bullet moving at moderate speeds as opposed to a 7mm bullet moving at high speed, don't ya think?

I'm not concerned with getting maximum velocity out of a cartridge, I am after maximum accuracy.

These low numbers(barrel life) must be loads that are pushing velocities very high I am guessing.
 
338 lm or 338rum edge pushing a 250gr bullet at same basic speed range (2900-3000) more expensive and not as much fun to shoot.By what some people are saying about barrel life maybe your load wouldnt be developed before you ware it out.
