7mm WSM no good?

Just wondering why the 270 and 300 WSM cartridges are more popular than the 7mm? According to Hodgdon load data the 7mm WSM has a very small performance edge over the 7mm Rem mag, so I don't get why it doesn't sell like hotcakes.:nest:
 
The lack of popularity of the 7WSM has nothing to do with ballistic performance. It's so close to most 7mm Rem Mags that it's basically a toss up and the 270WSM is pretty much half way from the standard 270 Win to the 270 Wtby.....guess the market decided there was more of a gap that needed filling in between those two....and Winchester really pushes thier new 270.....
Some day I hope to locate a Kimber Montana in 7WSM...the only WSM cartridge I'd care to own.
America loves the 30 caliber in many cartridges, so it's no surprise the 300WSM is more popular than the 7WSM...consider how many relatively popular 30 calibers there are,..30-30, 308 Win, 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 300 Wtby,...the list goes on a ways....7mm bores?...not as popular as 30 cals...7-08 and 280 Rems are not as popular as thier 30 caliber conterparts, 7mm Rem Mag is easily the most popular 7mm...and the larger cased 7's, like the STW and the RUM aren't that popular....popularity has nothing to do with ballistic performance...look at the popularity of the 30-30
 
I feel a major contribution to the 7WSM's lack of popularity is because of the shooting magazines. If Craig Bodington likes or dislikes a cartridge, then his readers bow down to his selections without ever taking the time to do their own research. Craig likes the 270WSM, so the 7WSM is ignored.
 
7mm = Metric association
.270 & .300 = imperial/standard association.

From my research on this one, cause I happen to own a 7WSM, is very simply that it did not take off in the US partially because of the metric stigma attached to it. Their market spills over to us so we get the after effects.
The 7WSM is actually a fine ballistic performer, aside from the bruises left by the light BLR of mine. ;)

I would like to find this rifle in 7mm WSM as a new carry rifle. My Model 700 in 300 RUM is a bit heavy with it's laminated stock. I like the 700 as a blind rifle with it's reach. But the 7mm WSM reaches out well too and the featherweight is not only the prettiest rifle ever made but a fast handling bush/still hunting rifle.
 
All that has been said is correct. .30 cal is a favorite of North America, so the .300WSM stays, the .270 WSM fills a good gap, and both are imperial.
The 7Rem Mag is quite popular, and the 7WSM really does the same thing ballistically, so anyone who is convinced of the magic of a fast .284 bullet will likely go with the more tried and trusted cartridge.
I have a 7wsm and I really like the cartridge. It's really sweet in the X-Bolt I have. If the cartridge goes the way of the .284Win, then my feelings won't be hurt that much since I handload. However, the Federal Fusion 150 gr bullets disappearing would be a loss.
 
I'm guilty of owning only 30 cal hunting rifles, 30-06, 308, 30-30. When I bought my last rifle, my choices(what was in stock) were between a 270 win and a 308, and I chose the 308 because of the handling of the short action. I think my next rifle will be a 7-08 or a 7WSM, time for a change in bore size. How is the recoil of the 7WSM compared to the 7mm Rem? My father owns a 7mmRem and 300 Win mag, and I can't say I "enjoy" magnum recoil. How do the WSM's chamber with the fat case and sharp shoulder?
