Hey Y'all, I'm looking at a Win M70 Super Shadow in 7mm WSM for purchase.
I checked out different dealers and none seem to have them in stock?
Is there a reason behind this? The one I'm looking at is going for a good
price. Just want to justify this purchase.
Thanks All

I shoot the 7mm WSM and love it. But, it is probably the least popular of the WSM line. I'm a handloader, and so I'm not worried if all the ammo manufacturers drop this cartridge. But if you buy factory loads, then you'd better stock up. Right now it is pretty easy to find 7WSM ammo [I like the Federal Fusion 150 gr], but 5 years from now? Hard to tell.
So because it's not terribly popular, the guns shops don't bring in many of them, and because of that it gets less popular. Following this line of thinking, it will be relegated to the same status as the .284 WCF in 10 years or less.
So if you buy one [and like I said, I LOVE mine] be prepared to deal with the 'lack of ammo' issue that's sure to come. And when it does come, then you'll have a hard time selling it off, too.

I shot 2 deer with mine this year. It's the most accurate hunting rifle I own!

In MHO the 7MMWSM is a great caliber, and it's too bad it isn't as popular at the other two WSM calibers. If you've found one you like, I'd say get it and try some of the federal fusion 150 ammo. That would be a good weight for that size cartridge. If it shoots the federal ammo well get four boxes if you can, as you can always reload. The 7mmWSM is a good caliber and I imagine it must shoot nice a flat too. I purchased the 300wsm becasue the 7mmWSM wasn't in stock at the tiime and have taken three woodland caribou all one shot each. the federal ammo in 180 shoots really well in mine.

The 7mm WSM is an awesome cartridge I think. It handles all the weights that the .270 does and more. As for brass becoming unavailable, that's untrue. Me and my buddy just tried Fire-Forming 270 WSM brass necked up in his FL Sizer. They came out just fine.

Buy the 7mm WSM...if anything it's worth it just to laugh in your mind when people say "WHY WOULD YOU BUY THAT??? It's going the way of the dodo and you'll never get ammo/brass for it!!!!" :D

Of course brass wouldn't be an issue. The .270 WSM is only .007" out of speck. It would neck up just fine. For my .308 Norma Mags I neck up 7mag brass. Necking up 270WSM for 7mmWSM would be even less of a change!

But if he's not a reloader and is depending on using factory loads, then 10 years or so down the road it might be hard to find. I'm just cautioning him about that.

For me, because I reload, I'm not worried in the least!
But I still can't get my handloads to match the velocity of the 150gr federal fusion factory loads, so when those disappear I'll be sad. Those things are screaming fast! On a cool day 3150 fps, and 3200 fps on a warm day.

The necking up wasnt what I thought the issue would be. The issue was that the .300 and .270 WSM shoulders are quit a bit shorter than the 7mm (looks like around 30 thou). And when we chambered the necked up case the short shoulder was far enough forward that the extractor wouldn't grab the rim. Fire Forming fixed this.

I have never seen WSS in Edmonton out of 7WSM ammo since the first one I bought in 2002 - just about always 3 to 4 different Federal and Winchester loads to choose from. I only shoot factory ammo and still have 2 full boxes of 160 grain 7WSM Winchester XP3 ammo - if you buy the rifle and are coming in to Edmonton shoot me a pm and I'll sell these to you cheaper than WSS. I sold my 7 in a Coyote (heavy) and couldn't find a Coyote Lite in 7 so bought one in 300WSM. There is no difference between a 7 short and a 7 tall unless you go to heavier bullet weight than 160 grain - with a 160 XP3 you don't need anything heavier.

Interesting. I thought the cases were identical. I wonder if I'd have a problem with my x-bolt, since it's a push feed, not the CRF.

The case of the 7wsm is a little longer in shoulder length and shorter in neck length. You could neck up 270wsm brass, seat a bullet long enough to jam into the lands, with a light powder charge fireform some brass. I don't think you would have this problem in the next 5-6 years. If you bought 100 brass now you would have enough brass for a lifetime of hunting.

There is a good point here being made regarding the demensions of the 7mmWSM case as opposed to the 270WSM case. I seem to remember reading in one of the gun publications several years ago that these two cases have slightly different demensions. I would go to Winchester and ask them for clarification. No sense in usng a neck sizer on a case that may not feed as effectively as one would hope it would. I would just find the factory ammo that the gun likes and go with that, buy enough boxes to be in decent supply, and maybe some new unfired brass as an extra source for reloading. In MHO I would suggest that the factory stuff isn't too far off the mark from hand loads. \But then again everyone has their own preferences.

My buddies 7mm WSM is a Abolt II Syn-Stalker.

We didnt push into the lands...just seated a 139 grn SST to the length of his magazine and put a conservative load of 55 grains of RL17 in it

One dimensions of the 7mm WSM case is somewhat different than the 270 & 300 WSM's
That dimension is the length of the case from the head to the juncture of body/shoulder. The 7mm is .038" longer to this point than is the 270 or 300 WSM case.
This creates a situation of seriously excessive headspace when fireforming the 270 or 300 brass.
As one poster mentioned, one could load a forming load behind a bullet that is jammed into the rifling so the case is held firmly back against the boltface while forming. Otherwise, there is a very real danger of a case separation on a later firing if the case had to stretch in the web area to fill out the dimension of the chamber.
The way to check if this has happened is to check case length before and after fire forming. If the case grew in length during the process, it has stretched in the web area, and is vulnerable at that point. Regards, Eagleye.

7 SAUM..Y??
Besides it having a blind magazine I think I'm gonna like her ;)
I just ordered some Talley rings from Clayton at Prophet River so hopefully by this weekend I'll be able to christen her with a CWD muley doe "smackdown"

I hope you rifle is a good shooter, you don't hear to many bad storeys about the M70. I have had pretty good luck with the couple of M70 I have used. I am going to build a 270-243wssm from a push feed M70 super short action, and my 300wsm is a pretty decent rifle, it shoots right around an inch with most loads, and a touch better with it's fav's. More importantly I seem to have good luck when I take it. Accuracy only counts when you find your game!
